Cannot install KB4592438

Hi,

KB4592438 will not install on my system. From Windows Update, it fails every time.

I have tried deleting everything in C:->Windows->SoftwareDistribution->Download; running several command line fixes that were supposedly helpful in a similar thread; ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter; tried downloading the KB direct from the Microsoft Update Catalog; and of course, tried restarting my PC.

The MS page for this KB says to make sure the Servicing Stack Update is installed and I have confirmed that it is.

What else could be at play for why this will not successfully install?

Hello, I’m Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.
Which Windows 10 build are you running - 1903, 1909, 2004 or 20H2 (Oct 2020)?

The usual reason why updates wont install is that it already is installed. Have you checked to ensure this isn’t the case?
What is the error message when it fails?
Are you running any third party antivirus software which may be preventing the download?

Hi Virginia,

Thanks for your response!

Edition    Windows 10 Pro
Version    20H2
Installed on    ‎10/‎27/‎2020
OS build    19042.572
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.31.0

The message I receive is "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x8007000d)"

I am not running any third party antivirus that would interfere with the download.

Thank you!

Try:
Right click on start & choose powershell with admin & enter:
SFC /SCANNOW
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Can other updates download fine?
If you’re running Defender check that the definitions are installing.

Is Windows activated?

You can also try the windows update minitool to update Windows:

Other updates work fine. Defender updated earlier today and some driver updates via Windows Update also successfully installed in the last couple days.

These are the same commands I found earlier. I ran them through command prompt as an admin, rather than powershell. Running through powershell:

- SCANNOW found corrupted files and repaired them

- StartComponentCleanup completed successfully

- RestoreHealth completed successfully

Windows is indeed activated.

The minitool found two updates other than this; one was for Silverlight and the other was a Defender definitions files; both of these updated successfully. After running the above commands in powershell, the problematic update was over 100GB and still failed.

Thank you!

Not even a Windows version update would be that big.
As this update didn’t appear when running the mini tool I suspect Windows update is corrupt.
Have you tried resetting the update components?
Open cmd prompt/powershell with admin & enter:
Net Stop bits
Net Stop wuauserv
Net Stop appidsvc
Net Stop cryptsvc
Ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
Ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
Net Start bits
Net Start wuauserv
Net Start appidsvc
Net Start cryptsvc
Restart the PC & try updating again.
If this fails/doesn’t correct the problem then click start, run, type regedit & click enter & find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
Try deleting the entries WUServer and WIStatusServer in the right pane if they’re there, if they’re not don’t worry.

Hi,

I had exactly this same problem... went through all the same steps you did all to no avail.

Finally, I came across this article, and followed the sequence described by user DavidLaurin1, and is worked for

me exactly as described.  I hope it help you as well...

Hi! Sorry for the delayed reply - unfortunately the issue persists:

- Several of the Net Stop commands were unsuccessful. The error message indicated they had not started

- Both Ren commands failed, saying the item did not exist.

- All of the Net Start commands were successful

Upon restarting my PC, I was unable to locate either entry in my registry.

Thank you!

Hi,

Thanks for sharing! I get stuck at the point where he suggests to roll back to 20H1, this does not show up in my Windows Update list. I would guess this is because I'm on a fresh installation of Windows? My old drive died suddenly and I replaced the drive and installed W10 off a boot USB at the end of October.
