Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

  • Is the computer still stuck on Personalized Settings?

Let's try the following steps and check.

a. Power down computer and wait for 10 minutes

b. Restart the computer - Setup will automatically restore your previous Windows 10 build or previous version of Windows.

c. Launch command prompt with administrator privileges.

d. Press Windows key + X

e. Click Command Prompt (Admin) and type the following command and press Enter

rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN

f. Exit command prompt

g. Restart the computer

Try the upgrade process again and check if works. If not, run the Windows update Troubleshooter and check if it helps:

a. PressWindows key + X and select Control Panel

b. In the search box, type troubleshooter and then click Troubleshooting.

c. Under System and Security, click Fix problems with Windows Updates.

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

My friend had the same problem after the Windows 10 update forced itself onto her computer.. You have to format the disk and re-install Windows. Not sure if they still offer the USB installation of Windows 10 for free. You might want to chat live with a Microsoft technician online, because you might have issues with the licensing. Had to buy $100+ hard drive just to back up the previous data.

This is what you do if you are unsure whether it is fixable without reinstalling Windows:

Go to the Windows 10 Boot Options menu. If none of the recovery options work (such as rolling back to Windows 7/8), then you are basically stuffed, because that means the install is corrupt.

I have restarted multiple times. It gets stuck again usually on a black screen either before or after entering login credentials.

Last attempt i stopped boot process several times until it went to safe mode. Tried to run diagnostics and nothing seemed wetting what, but the network specific ones did not work in safe mode.

Restarted on safe mode several times (from msconfig) using the three different options (minimum, system, normal). The safe mode ones seemed to boot fine, but can't really do much there. When booting back into normal mode, it went all the way to ask login password. I noticed slow booting.

After entering password, it went to black screen with avpersonalized settings window, very slowly. It completed at least one, and it is stuck on "windows desktop update". Had been there for about 7 hours. I see that the hard drive comes on fire an instant every minute or so.

This all happened after a forced update restart, that got stuck at 89% or 98%% for hours and had to shut off and restart.

What can i do? Can that process be done in safe mode?

MS should really enforce that a backup is taken prior to upgrade/patch install.

After I tried everything suggested here, nothing worked.

I was lucky to have a backup to which I could restore.

And then disable update service
