Windows 10 error message "Another Installation In Progress Please Complete Installation Before Continuing"

When ever I try to install or un-install anything I keep getting this error message - "Another Installation In Progress Please Complete Installation Before Continuing"

I have seen others solution to this problem but they are all for win 7 or win 8  mine is win 10.

Wanted to add some more error messages that I am still getting.

Error Code: 0xC0070652

Error Message : Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install.

Additional message: MSI Engine: Failed to initialize the package.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to follow the methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Check the status of Windows Installer Services

a)    Press Windows key + R and type services.msc in the search field and press ENTER.

b)    Scroll down and find the Windows Installer.  Double-click “Windows Installer” in the Services list.

c)   Ensure that the Windows Installer service is running.

d)    Right-click Windows Installer, and then click Start. If Start is unavailable and the Stop and Restart options are available, this tells you that the service is already started.

Method 2:

Step1: If you have any third party security software installed on your computer I would suggest you to disable security software temporarily and perform a clean boot and check if it helps.

Please contact the manufacturer of the security software to disable it.

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Step2: Place the computer on Clean Boot and check if it helps:

Refer to this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, reset the computer to start as usual. Refer step 3

Hope this information helps you.

Please revert for any clarification on this or any Windows issues. We will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

Almost worked, in services.msc when I right clicked windows installer all options were greyed out Start, Stop, Restart.. etc.

The clean boot looked like it was going to work, some of my other app installed ok, but when trying to install Windows Essentials 2012 got up to 95% then brought up the dreaded message again "Another program is preventing Windows Essentials from installing... Wait for the other program to install and then try installing again"

Anything else I could try?

Hi Andrew,

We appreciate your time and effort for getting back to us and I apologize for the delay in responding.

If the steps for re-registering the Windows Installer is not working in normal mode, then I would suggest you to try it in Safe mode. It should work.

Safe Mode:

Follow the below steps to start the computer in safe mode:

1. Type Recovery Options in Search.

2. Click on Recovery and choose Restart Now.
3.Click on Troubleshoot and choose Startup Settings.

4. Click on Restart.

5.Press F5 to start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help.

Thank you.

I tried the steps with the services.msc, and all of the options, start, stop, resume were grayed out.

All I did was do a reset on my laptop because it wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet, and I had on here was 1 program, serato dj, which worked perfectly. Now I can't install anything because it says Failed, and when I try again, it says installation in progress. I went to the Installed programs to see about removing or repairing, and they are not listed. I tried the MS Installation Utility and it did not show the programs in it's list. I guess I'll do another reset and hope for the best. This laptop is just a year old. Dell. Win 10 64bit

Using Process Explorer, I discovered that there was a hung in-progress installation, in this case a background update from Google Backup/Sync. I saw this because there were two msiexec.exe processes, one the service, the other with command line arguments. I killed both processes (killing the gsync install wasn't enough, the service was still hung waiting for a response), then restarted the service, then ran the install. All is well.

You probably could use Task Manager as well, but the key is that you need to see the command lines to make sure you kill the correct tasks.
