I just upgraded to Windows 10. I can't open .wmv files with Windows Media Player. I can easily find the player, but when I try to play it I get this message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

I don't know if this helps anyone else out, but this is an issue I am having.

Mine says "expired video" or "must be verified" or "check xbox.com for solution".

I have no problem playing wmv files in Media Player but cannot use them in Movie Maker. Thius represents 100's of hours of investment that I cannot use.

I found a solution under someone else's post of the same issue.  something about removing wmp and putting back.  it worked for me.  if you search for this issue here you should be able to find it. If it let's you search by user i commented that it worked.

Are you saying that windows movie maker wont play wmv or that you no longer have windows movie maker after upgrading?

if you don't have it, you can reinstall it, download windows essentials from

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/essentials-install-offline-faq

Apparently it runs fine in windows 10

I am having the same problem. I make the videos with Windows Movie Maker and save them to my PC. When I try to play them I get the message, that the file format is not supported. I can play the videos in the 'TV & Movie app, but only the audio is present, no video. There is no answer that I can find on the Microsoft web site for this problem.
