Unable to launch or install Windows Mixed Reality after installing KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251)

  • Existing Installs: If Windows Mixed Reality was previously installed and you attempt to launch the Mixed Reality Portal you may see a Something Went Wrong error. 
  • New/Reinstalls: If installing or reinstalling Windows Mixed Reality you may see a message that says “We couldn’t download Windows Mixed Reality.

A limited number of customers have reported an issue installing or running Windows Mixed Reality after a voluntary recent update (16299.251).  We’ve removed the update that caused this problem. Most Windows 10 customers were not impacted, but for the few that were a fix for this issue was included in cumulative update KB4088776

To resolve your issue:

  1. Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.  Install KB4088776.  Alternatively, you can manually install the cumulative update at http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4088776.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Launch the Mixed Reality Portal to complete setup.

Since my last response, visited www.catalogue.update.microsoft.com/downloadDialogue.asp, and saved KB4090913 and KB4088776. Tried to install both, this showed a caption that my computer was not suitable for version of WINDOWS installed in computer in use. Can you offer your views  as to what is the reason. Bairn_966.

Well today visited my Windows update and without any changes made by me, found both KBs are now installed. Did Microsoft elves, work through the night before last, and rectified the problems reported. Either way, I am pleased this problem solved, though no doubt will never know what the real cause was. Thank you everyone.

I'm having the same issue but am on build 15063, does that matter? Today I manually updated this build to the latest updates, but still am stuck on the message that the software couldn't be downloaded after the setup is completed (computer requirements met, headset calibrated to room). Just wondering if it's possible to use this on the build I'm on.

I would think it is best to have version 1709 installed for all current updates to work satisfactory. Another crucial main version of Windows 10 is scheduled for early April 2018. No doubt, as other previous Window 10 updates, this will cause chaos with many Windows 10 installed computers. Apparently the new version has several new applications (of which many of us will not be playing with) but have no choice but to have them installed. Have you a personal reason for not having version 1709 installed?
