Son found a way to bypass Xbox screen time restrictions. Need a fix

My son stumbled across a way to get around screen time restrictions on his Xbox one. This is what he does:

Disconnects from wifi

Shuts down Xbox

Unplugs the Xbox so it does a hard reset

Plug Xbox back in. **at this point the time on the xBox is 12:00 PM**

He waits about 5 minutes, then reconnects to the wifi and logs in.

He does this and it never kicks him off until the next time he turns the Xbox off and turns it back on without unplugging it.

Has anyone else dealt with this? If so, is there a fix?

Try the Xbox support staff, they might have a way around it.

My son has been bypassing the screen time as well as the allowed time - he said by simply apearing offline. Very broken unless hes lying about that too. Which is very much a possibility as well - darn kids.

My daughter figured the same thing out!  So frustrating.  The ability to program time limits is what sold me on the Xbox.

My son has been doing the same thing.  The activity section of the Family Settings page still reports how much time he spends using the Xbox One, but the screen time settings have no effect.

Has Microsoft acknowledged this problem yet?  Are they working on a fix?

Thanks for the post!

Confiscating the controllers from now on... Or perhaps factory-reset and drop off at Goodwill...

I can confirm that as of the date of this post the issue persists!

My son does exactly the same.

I'm an IT engineer and here are my observatins and thoughts:

1. Xbox One doesn't have an in-built power source (aka battery or accum) like the one you can find on a typical PC motherboard. It is usually intended to provide a long-lasting power source to keep the CMOS settings (e.g. system time). That is why when the console is unplagged from power for some time it losts some settings like time, etc. I assume it losts family account settings like limit too.

2. Once the console is plugged back and turned on it tries to connect to wifi and update various settings including time, and family account settings. (In case if they had been changed while the console was off/offline).

3. If the connection is not available at this moment (e.g. it had been purposely disconnected before the console was turned off) it probably keeps trying a few more times or some limited time (like 5 minutes mentined above) but after that it stops trying and NEVER tries again. So if the settings including the limites have not been provided/updated during the start process they won't be requested again after even if wifi connection is restored and available.

Microsoft, this is a MASSIVE issue that must be fixed!

The information about such loopholes gets spread across by teendage folks REALLY quickly - go on YouTube and check. It devaluates the whole idea of family accounts and control!

I have bypass of family rules too. I have 3 kids and 2 computers. I set time limit for all of them, lets say 2 hours each. Family rule is set that this limit valid for all computers and XBOX. What they discovered that if they log in to both computers with the same account it calculates only usage of single computer. So instead of computer usage for all kids limit of 6 hours they can use 6*2=12hours. Also they said that even after usage of limit if they try to connect to both computers with same account precisely at the same time  sometimes one computer unlocks for unlimited time.

So Microsoft, as such a big and good company you still have plenty things to do to ensure our new generation could not bypass your creations :)
