Granting Parental Approval Asking for US Charity Donation

Hi there,

I am trying to set up my 11 year old son's new Windows laptop. I am trying to grant parental approval but it asks me to provide a $0.50 charity donation with an American credit card and address. As I live in the UK I can't provide this.

Can't imagine I am the only person in this situation.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Martin

Hi,

Why does Microsoft charge me when I create an account for my child?
Applies to: Microsoft account
Microsoft and Family Safety comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) regarding online account creation for children under the age of 13. To verify that an adult is giving a child permission to create a new Microsoft account, COPPA requires a small amount be charged to the adult's credit card. We charge 50 cents for this verification. This charge isn't refundable.

Am I charged for each child I sign up?
No. Microsoft only charges you once to verify your age when you first create a child account. After that, you can use your Microsoft account to create additional child accounts.

Do other companies charge this fee?
Yes. Companies that allow accounts to be created for children often use a credit card charge to verify parental consent under COPPA.

How does Microsoft use this money?
The fee is donated to UNICEF.

Where can I view billing details?
To view billing activity related to Microsoft account age verification charges, go to Payment & billing and sign in using the Microsoft account that you used to create the child's account.

Why do I get an error when I try to enter my credit card information?
Make sure that:

The info you typed matches your credit card (such as your full name and address).

Your credit card hasn't expired.

Your credit card has been activated by your financial institution.

If you continue to receive errors, contact your financial institution to check the status of the credit card.

Instead of creating an explicit "child account" you can use the alternative approach described in
