Hi,

Thank you for posting to your query to Microsoft Community.

Here are solutions to some common problems with installing updates. You might be able to automatically fix some problems by running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Use the Windows Update troubleshooter.

a)       Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.

b)       In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.

c)       Click on “Windows Update”.

d)     Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.

e)       Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

Please check the troubleshooting report in detail and check if it provides any useful information regarding the issue. You may also try the suggestion given by the troubleshooter and then try installing the update via Windows Update.

If the Windows Update troubleshooter didn't correct the problem, unplug all non-essential devices, such as webcams, game controllers, and printers, unless the update is for one of these devices, and then run Windows update again.

Hope the information helps, if you have any further queries, feel free to post. We are here to assist you.

Regards,

Guru Kiran

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I suggest you to manually reset the Windows Updates Components and then reinitiate the Windows Update process.

Resetting Windows Update Components will fix corrupt Windows Update Components and help you to install the Windows Updates quickly.

Please follow the below steps to reset the Windows Updates Components:

1. Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

2. Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                           net stop wuauserv

                           net stop cryptSvc

                           net stop bits

                           net stop msiserver

3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                          ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

                          ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

                        net start wuauserv

                        net start cryptSvc

                        net start bits

                        net start msiserver

5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.

6. After restarting the computer, now retry to install Windows Updates.

Hope the information is helpful. Keep us posted on the status for further assistance.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I apologize for the delay.

I suggest you to install the updates in clean boot state and check.

A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.

* Place the computer in a Clean Boot and check if the issue is occurring due to any third party programs.

Follow the link to view the steps to perform Clean Boot:

Disclaimer:  Start the computer in normal mode refer the section, "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" from the link above.

Hope the information is helpful. Feel free to write to us for any other assistance with Windows, we’ll be glad to assist you.
