The link tells me to update to the latest version of Windows 10. That's what I'm trying to do that's failing. I ran the windows update troubleshooter, but it didn't resolve the problem.

We'd like to know if you're trying to upgrade from a previous version of Windows. If so, you may create an ISO file to install Windows 10. Expand Using the tool to upgrade this PC to Windows 10 (click to show more or less information) on this link and follow the instructions provided.

If you have Windows 10 and you're trying to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10, we recommend that you perform an in-place upgrade. See this Forum Article provided by PaulSey... and follow the on-screen instructions.

Keep us posted with the result.

I've been trying to do the in-place upgrade from windows 10 to the latest version. It gets through the download and then the install gets to 85% and fails.

To continue troubleshooting the issue, follow the steps below:

Method 1: Disable third-party antivirus.

Third-party antivirus may cause conflicts with installing updates in Windows.

Note: Make sure to enable your antivirus after installing the updates successfully.

Method 2: Update Windows while in clean boot.

Clean boot starts Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, which may eliminate conflicts that occur when installing updates in Windows. Refer to this article on how to perform a clean boot in Windows.

After performing clean boot, update Windows 10 and see if the issue still occur.

Method 3: Create a new admin account.

Corrupted user profile may cause issues with installing Windows update. We recommend that you create a new administrator account and then update Windows.

Note:  If you were able to update using the new administrator account, login to the affected account then try to copy the files and paste it to the Public user. Then sign in to the second account, and move the files from the Public user to the second account before deleting the corrupted user profile.

Keep us update with the result of the troubleshooting.

I'll try these and let you know.

Are there seriously no log files or something that say what gave the error? This guess and check approach seems inefficient and tedious.
