Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant Doesn't Have Enough Space

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that is running Windows 10, and it has been prompting me to update it. The problem is that every time I go to update Windows, it tells me there is not enough disk space.

The Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant says that I need at least 8gb free on my hard drive, and I only have 4. I do not know how I can get any more since the laptop only has a 32gb solid state drive with only 27.6gb total space, and I cannot get more space with Windows installed.

I have a 16gb flash drive, and from what I understand is I can upgrade/update Windows using external storage if it has enough space. But for some reason, the Upgrade Assistant isn't giving me that option.

Does anyone know how I can get it to work? The computer is working fine, but I would really like to get it up to date so I don't have to deal with notifications every time I use it that it needs to be updated.

Thanks!

Answer-by-number:

1. Did the computer come with Win10 preinstalled, did you do a clean install of Win10, or did you upgrade a Win7 computer or a Win8.1 computer [<=PICK ONE!] to Win10?

2. Has a Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

3. Have you ever run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool?

4. What Version & OS Build of Windows 10 is currently installed?

  • Press & hold the Windows Key and press the R key. In the RUN dialog, type WINVER and press the Enter key.

Yes, this computer came preinstalled with Windows 10. If I remember correctly, McAfee was on the computer, but I ran the McAfee removal tool after the trial ran out. So that is uninstalled.

The computer is currently running Version 10.0 (Build 10240).

I'll have to check out adjusting the disk partitions, but for some reason I can't select an option to use an external drive. The Upgrade Assistant doesn't give me that option.

You'll have to do it before you run the Upgrade Assistant/attempt to upgrade to (Win10 1607?) again.

Okay, so I downloaded the partition assistant, but the drive is not partitioned at all. There is nothing for me to adjust to make more space. I just don't know where all the space went, Windows 10 can't possibly take up 26 of my 29 available gigabytes.

29 GB is a relatively small drive these days. Is it a "netbook?" Is it a HDD or a SSD?

When was the last time you ran Disk Cleanup?

Yes, it's pretty small. It's a Dell Inspiron netbook, it has an SSD. It's a great computer, I just hate that computers with SSDs have either very little space or are ridiculously expensive. My HP laptop has a 750GB HDD. MUCH better for space.

I just ran it before my last post, along with CCleaner. I also "optimized" the drive (since I cannot defragment an SSD from what I gather).

So did running Disk Cleanup improve things or...? [You needn't run Disk Cleanup and CCleaner.]

It did very little (as in .09GB little). I know, I just ran CCleaner as a second pass. It actually helped a touch.
