Windows 10 - Login Screen Error Recovery Mode

Has anyone seen the Error Recovery Mode message on the login screen for Windows 10 (see below)? If so, what can be done to remove it? I've tried doing a startup repair from our install disk but haven't had much luck getting anywhere. There isn't any type of error message while booting to indicate that it's entering Error Recovery Mode either.

Even with the error, everything else seems to be running ok. I can log in and work normally, but the message remains. So it's not mission critical, but would be nice to know how to remove since the machine is going to go to one of my users.

I suggest you to perform a Clean Boot. A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.

* Place the computer in a Clean Boot and check if the issue is occurring due to any third party programs.

Sorry, just tried that and no luck. When clean booting, I still get the Error Recovery Mode message. Seems like it's a MS issue rather than 3rd party.

Ended up finding the solution to my own problem (at least for now). We use Novell client in our office. This Windows 10 image was built/upgraded from a Windows 8.1 image, which had an older version of the Novell client on it. Although there is no official client from Novell yet, uninstalling the old version and downloading the most up to date client (Novell Client 2 SP4 for Windows 8.1) seems to have removed the error message.

Reinstall Netware client did fix the issue for me. I had client 2 sp3, reinstalled and no more error. Once I reinstalled I was able to uninstall since it wasn't  needed.

Now you can get client 2 sp4 which works on win 10.

Hi There,

My work computer recently performed the Windows 10 upgrade, without authorization and now it is stuck in Recovery Mode.  I am not happy about this as I have had to send the computer to an IT specialist to have my data recovered before back-grading to Windows 8.1.  I phoned Microsoft and the only advice I received was to reset my computer.  The lady I spoke to didn't seem to understand that the data on the HDD is extremely important and needed to be recovered, not erased.  I asked the Microsoft representative if this was a common issue, I was told this was the first she had heard of it ... amazing as when I was in the IT specialist's offices they received a phone call from a customer with exactly the same issue!   I am now going to be stuck with an IT bill for who knows how much for a problem that wasn't caused by me, but was forced on me by Microsoft. I think I'll seriously consider purchasing a Mac next time I need to buy a computer.
