System Image Backup on Windows 10

Have just moved to Win. 10 from 8.1

I used to run "System Image Backup" in 8.1

In 8.1 new runs of the backup overwrite older versions.

So two questions for Win 10 "System Image backups"

1 Should I delete the Win 8.1 version before starting the Win 10 version?

2 Does the Win 10 version overwrite older copies of the System Image backup?

Hi John,

Please find answers to your questions below.

1: Yes you can delete Windows 8.1 System image backup because it will not work in Windows 10.

2: Yes it does overwrite the older copies just like Windows 8.1.

Refer the steps below to set up system image backup in Windows 10.

A system image is an exact copy of all system disks which can be used to restore your PC to the state it was in at the time the image was made. By default, a system image only includes the drives that Windows requires to run, including Windows 10 itself, your system settings, programs, and files. You may also include any other drive in the image if you wish.

When you restore your computer from a system image it is a complete restoration, you cannot choose individual items to restore and all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced with the contents of the system image.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to create a system image.

1: Open the Control Panel.

2: Click/tap on System and Security.

3: Click/tap on File History.

4: Click/tap on System Image Backup.

5: Click/tap on the Create a System Image link on the left side.

6: Windows will quickly search for available backup devices.

7: Select the location you want to save your system image to.
8: At this point you can select any available drives you would like to be included in the backup. Click/tap on Start backup to begin the imaging process.
9: The imaging process will now begin.
10: When the process has completed you can click Close.

Hope the above information answers all your questions. If you have any other queries please post back. Thank you.

Hi John,

Thank you for update and reply.

Slow backup is related to choosing Entire PC Backup. Choosing this backs up all of the drives in your PC including the drive you use to store the backups. Better to choose Disks and partitions for more control and the backup times will improve. Thank you.

Thank you for quick reply, but how do I "Choose Disks & Partitions"? When I go into Control panel I select "System Image Backup" & get the box "Back up now" which I click onto. I get no message to select Disks/Partitions.

Looking for you help

Thanks.

Have just tried this, went into Settings/Update & security/Backup.

Had external drive fitted

Noted that "Auto Backup" switch was ON

Selected "More Options"

Message to say Backup up size would be 58.1GB

Clicked on "Backup"

It took maximum of 2 seconds!

No output on external drive

Also my "C" Drive is 77GB

So what is the problem?

Also why can't it work via the Control Panel?

Hi John,

I apologize for the delay in response.

From the description provided, I understand that the Windows scheduled Backup is not working properly.

To be able to assist you better, provide us a few more details on the below questions.

  • Does the same issue occur if you try to save the backup on to an external storage device (USB/HDD) ?
  • Are you connected to a Domain Network?
  • Did you check if the issue if the location you chose to save back up in network is available during the time the back up is scheduled to work?

As an initial recommendation, I suggest you to follow the below steps to check the status of Volume Shadow Copy service and SPP services.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

  • Press the windows key + R to open the Run Command Utility. Type in services.msc and press Enter to open the Windows Services console.
  • If the SPP service is disabled, double-click it to open the service properties.
  • If Volume Shadow Copy service is disabled, double-click it to open the service properties
  • Click the Startup type list, click Automatic (Delayed Start), and then click Apply.
  • Under Service status, click Start.

Write to us with the updated information and we would be happy to help you.
