Screen freezes after upgrade to windows 10

I upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 ahead of Sony's bulletin instruction to wait until drivers or what not are ready by November. Everything is running okay except for one - the screen freezes at no particular time when I'm doing something, when the laptop is inactive for sometime or merely listening to music.  The first few times an error window popped up with the message an error was encountered, i.e. driver power state failure and required a restart.  Now I don't get any error message, my laptop just stops and freezes. The only way to get out of the problem is switching the power off and then turning it back on again just like normal.  I'm thinking of switching back to windows 8.1.  rather than risk losing valuable data and wasting time when it prematurely stops.  I would appreciate any help to resolve this particular issue.  I've got a Sony VAIO laptop model SVE14A25CGB.

Hi Paolo,

Thank you for being part of Windows 10.

I would suggest you to check for updates and make sure that your computer is installed with all the latest one available till date.

Also, to help resolve this issue, use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow (yes there is a space after sfc)                                                                         The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. This scan make take a while to complete.

Hope this helps you. Let us know either way. Make it a great day!

I have tried that, yet even still, the screen randomly freezes on me. I have updated Windows 10 with the latest update and the screen still freezes on me because of "Power_State_Failure" (when I leave it alone and it turns into a blue screen if I do not force restart it) or something like that, and it is annoying me to no end!

Are you guys at Microsoft even gonna do anything about this to prevent screen freezes from happening again? Because it happens almost every day I use it and it is ruining my workflow.

PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP!

Thank you for your attention.

P.S. I use a Toshiba Qosmio Gaming Laptop that is running Windows 10.

Hi JP.  Thanks for the reply.  I did run a windows update (and checked Sony's upgrade bulletin which seemed not functional anymore. The last upgrade notice on the board dates back to August!) before running the SFC as instructed. Unfortunately, my screen still freezes at times after a prolong standby and on several occasions whilst watching video albeit not as frequent as it used to be.  I've gone past the stage (30 days?) since I upgraded to Windows 10 meaning I can't go back to 8.1 platform.  I guess I'll just run a system file check every now and again and keep tabs on available update to resolve the issue in due time.  Meanwhile, should you have anymore suggestions please let me know.  I would be most grateful for all the help I can get.  Cheers

Hello, Thank you for your help (in advance). I also have the same issue with my Sony Vaio and I recently upgraded to Windows 10 (I love it!). There is just this one problem with my computer freezing. The fan gets louder after the computer freezes. And, I tried running the sfc /scannow but I got a message that I need to be an administrator. "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility". Do you think the problem may be the antivirus software fighting with each other? Thanks, again.

Hi,

We appreciate your time and effort for getting back to us.

Ensure to update all pending updates and also, update all device drivers from the Device Manager. Remember to restart the system to keep the Windows up to date.

I suggest you to perform a Clean Boot to find out which application/service is causing this issue.

A clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts and to determine what is causing the problem. Perform a clean boot on the computer by following the steps given in the link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: The steps for Windows 8.1 applies to Windows 10.

Disclaimer: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with Windows. We are glad to assist you.

Thank you.

I upgraded from windows to 10; use an Acer aspire; never had any crashes or freezes until I upgraded to win10. Now I get almost daily freezes, with no way to escape except hard shut down. BAD for me and my computer!   All updates are done in a timely manner,  in fact some of the updates coincided with the freezes. When I have tried to update various drivers I receive message that all drivers are the most recent available.

PLEASE help resolve this issue.

Hello Rathad,

I tried to perform a "Clean Boot" but I am not able to get past the first step, i.e., "

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.

When I swipe the top right edge, middle right edge, bottom right edge or any other right edge with my hand, all I get is a vertical gray bar on the right hand side of the screen with the wording, "ACTION CENTER" on the top and all these other things such as "tablet mode, all settings, location, airplane mode, tablet something, etc." on the bottom. There is no Search. When I use my mouse and point my curser to the lower-right corner, nothing happens. Please advise further on how to perform a "Clean Boot".

Better yet, get rid of these freezes, crashes - whatever you want to call them.

Thank you.

Nancy
