Screen Distortion after latest Win10 update

I have just updated my Win10 to the latest build 1709.

But after the update, my screen is completely distorted. Like a broken TV screen.

I am running on Nvidia Geforce 720 with the latest driver updated.

I have a few softwares and games that I am using that require 1709 build.

Please advice urgently as I require to work on my PC.

Microsoft have now removed the offending driver from their update server so if you remove the new driver for the graphics adapter from your machine and then allow Windows to reinstall drivers for the adapter, it will only be able to find the older, working driver and should install this.

by Steve Bellguille on Microsoft Technet forums

  1. Go to Device Manager and Display Adapters then right click on your adapter, e.g. ATI Radeon HD 2600, then select "Uninstall device" and tick "Delete the driver software for this device" then click "Uninstall"
  2. Restart the computer (not shutdown, but restart) and Windows should then download the old driver.

 If you have a newer driver you were using then download it from your computer manufacturer.

Hopefully you should now see the 2015 version of the driver if you right click on the adapter in Device Manager and select Properties and then the Driver tab or whichever driver you had before the update.

This approach saves having to do rollbacks, system restores or disabling updates etc.

  1. Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website page (or from your computer manufacturers website}
  2. at http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com  search for your driver
  3. If you are using a laptop or an all-in-one PC you will want the Mobility driver, otherwise you probably want the one that doesn't include Mobility.
  4.  If you have a newer driver you were using then download it from your computer manufacturer.
  • If you are running 32-bit Windows, download the smaller of the two files shown for your device, otherwise download the larger.
  • Create a new folder in your downloads folder called "Video driver"
  • Double click on the CAB file you downloaded to open it and then drag its contents into the "Video driver" folder
  • Go to Device Manager and Display Adapters, select the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, right click and select Update Driver
  • Click on "Browse my computer for driver software"
  • Browse to the "Video driver" folder you previously created and press OK and Next
  • Hopefully this will install the 2015 version of the drive and you'll be back up and running.

    If you find and download your driver . Back it up to a usb disk.

    Microsoft has a troubleshooter to hide updates

  • Hope this sorts it out for those of you who still have problems.

    Best.

    I recently did a repair upgrade. The problem resurfaced. I was able to solve the problem this time by performing the following steps.

    1. Open NVIDIA GeForce Experience & update drivers (Optional)
    2. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and navigating to Display -> Change Resolution
    3. Select the problem display and scroll down to Apply the following changes
    4. Select Use NVIDIA color settings
    5. Change Output color depth from 12 bpc to 8 bpc
    6. Apply.

    Your results may vary.

    I have a 3-monitor setup, Two 1080p & one at 1366x768. This Samsung monitor is technically a TV.

    Although this does seem to fix the screen distortion I still can't find what is causing the issue. Next time I sign in or restart it is distorted again.

    Hi

    I have the same issue where in "LOWER HALF the SCREEN" is garbled and UPPER half of the screen is intact.

    The following are the sequence of events:

    1. I was running an old Intel CPU HW.

    2. The OS upgrade was done to 1803 (There was one reboot that was done after the upgrade). 32-bit OS for x64 based processor.

    3. Post this I upgraded the HW to Inteli7-7700CPU with GA-H270M-D3H Motherboard(has Intel H270 Express Chipset). I have NO other specific add-in card or graphics cards and is running with default configuration.

    When I booted in "Clean boot mode" (as per your initial suggestion) the screen comes in full display without any issue. I uninstalled few old SW. I re-booted again, but screen was again in same old garbled state(LOWER Half garbled, UPPER HALF is intact).

    I found Mcfaee anti-virus as the only running services in this boot. I uninstalled them and rebooted and found the display in the same mode.

    I rebooted again in "Clean boot mode" and ran

    "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth"

    and later

    "sfc /scannow". The following is the output

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.112]
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 10.0.17134.1
    Image Version: 10.0.17134.112
    [==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully.
    The operation completed successfully.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow
    Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.
    Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
    Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Let me know how to resolve this problem. As per device manager, the current "Display Adapter" is "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" with driver version "10.0.17134.1".

    Thanks.
