Got this same error from Windows Update some time after upgrade to Windows 10. Ans Windows FixIt which should fix the error, does not (yet?) work on Windows 10.

If you are sure that on your system Office XP was never installed..

stop here searching.. go to:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

using "wushowhide.diagcab" you will probably discover that WinX is inventing other "things" you should update..

WinX is still a child!

OK folks, I've excepted that Office XP might not work quite right but it does work on Windows 10. I did the Microsoft Office update trial and after the trial was over my Office XP started working about 90%.

Now what I also wanted to say before was that although Windows 10 didn't like Office XP it kept trying to update it and the update always failed.

I've had this Office XP for a lot of years, brought it on Ebay or Amazon, have downloaded it a few times without any problems until Win10 but like I said it's working fine now after I downloaded the Microsoft 365 trial but didn't buy it. I just reloaded my old Office XP and now everything is fine, haven't had any updates trying to update my Office XP.

Will look at the link you sent, not sure what your saying about "this way round" will let you know.

Hear we talk about  Office XP Service Pack 3 - Error 0x80096004 arising when running windows update in WinX (automatic, you have no influence on as soon as you are online)

"then try this way round" means not via normal windows update process.

but IF you like freeware best choice:

https://www.openoffice.org/    or   https://www.libreoffice.org/

For Svizzero and PsychoJim2, there are 2 files there one is a partial and one is the full, I've just downloaded the partial, the full is really big.

I downloaded the large one. I will be honest I don't know what the difference is between them (apart from the size obviously) but it worked and that's what matters. I would go for the large one, and remember, patience is a virtue.
