Last update caused all custom file associations to reset to defaults

My PC updated Windows 10 yesterday afternoon ("Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173)". After rebooting, it completely screwed all my custom file associations (mostly for media files: photos, audio, and video).

A few minutes after the reboot, the Action Center started firing popups at me, one after the other, every few seconds:

"An app default was reset. An app caused a problem with the default setting for .avi files so it was reset to Films & TV."

with a different file extension for each popup (avi, bmp, mp4, and so on) . Even .pdf files were changed from Adobe Reader to Microsoft Edge. As well, all my custom context menu items for these same file types were also deleted. I spent a lot of time setting these associations up and now they were all obliterated. I'd backed them all up in a .reg file but running it didn't do anything. So with a heavy (and angry) sigh I started manually changing the associations back to the way I had them. However, each time I finished making a change within seconds the Action Center would fire the same message as before at me for the file type I'd just changed and it would be reset back to the MS default again.

Finally in exasperation, I just used System Restore to go back before the updates and that solved the problem. Now, the Action Center keeps nagging me to set a time to reinstall this same update. I know I can't block it indefinitely, and there are probably important security patches in it I should have. So the question is: How can I stop it from **** up my file associations again?

A Google search indicated others were having this same issue, but so far no one's figured out how to stop it.

I did not experience the same issue as yours. I had the yesterday update, aka Patch Tuesday.

So you had some custom file associations and they were left intact after the update? Were they for media file types?

.pdf files to Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, .jpg picture files to IrfanView, .mp4 files to Windows Media Player v.12, etc. They have not been not changed after the said update.

Good to know. It may have been just a glitch that happened to me during the update process and possibly won't happen again if I reinstall the update. Thanks for chiming in, I appreciate it.

I just installed the update and got the same error for .jpg .jpeg and .png. Tried changing the association back to Irfanview but it will be changed back to Photos again after a while. Tried changing the default app in the Settings for Photo Viewer to Irfanview. Again, it will be changed back to Photos after a while. I'm using the latest version of Irfanview.

Same experience as senhaku. Been using Irfanview, but Photos app keeps stealing the associations. Tedious :(

There's a lot of it about, despite one person saying it didn't happen to him.

PDF and photo-type stuff is steadily and continuously being changed - more than "tedious", Ján !

What is bothering to go round looking at files that I'm not even using and changing the default?

It's clearly deliberate.

Does anybody ever **check** this stuff?

Have you checked which file types to open in IrfanView Properties/Extensions window ?

Done that check in Irfanview already. Tried ticking the boxes for GIF and JPG and they'll be cleared away after a while. It doesn't make sense to hv to tick the boxes every time Windows reset them.
