Hey booger. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

1) There is a new guided walk-through from Microsoft for repairing Windows Update that leads up to resetting components if necessary: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/.... Try running that first.

2) If that fails try manually resetting Windows Update Service:

Open administrative Command Prompt by typing CMD in Start Search, right click result to Run as Administrator, copy and paste or type the following commands one-by-one followed by Enter key.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and see if Windows Updates works then

3) You can also install the Updates manually that fail to install which are logged at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Installed Update History, and then search for those to download and install from this Catalog: http://test.catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/sit...

4) If they continue to fail and interfere, then you can block them using one of these methods: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent...

5) Complete Guide to Managing Updates after Version 1803: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-windows-up...

6) If Updates still won't run go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

7) If nothing else helps you can run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows in about an hour while saving your files, apps and most settings, solves many problems while also bringing it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hello booger#502
1. Run Windows Update troubleshooter
Press Windows key + I to summon the Settings app.
Select Update & Security.
Choose Troubleshoot from the left pane.
Expand Windows Update Troubleshooter and click ”Run the troubleshooter”.

If that didn't work
2. Clean temporary files
Open This PC or File Explorer.
Right-click on the partition you want to relieve of unnecessary data and open Properties.
Click on Disk Cleanup.error 0x800f0900 windows 10
Click on the “Clean up system files” option.
Check all boxes and click OK.

If the issue persist
3. Run SFC and DISM
Open Command Prompt as admin.
In the command-line, type sfc/scannow and press Enter.error 0x800f0900 windows 10
Wait until the scan ends and restart your PC.
And this is how to run the DISM utility:

Right-click on the Command Prompt and run it as an administrator.
In the command line, copy-paste these lines one by one and press Enter after each:
DISM /online /Cleanup-Image / ScanHealth

I hope it helps

Thanks for your feedback.

The first step would be to try resetting Windows updates using an automatic script. See:
http://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2015/12/windows...
Make sure you run the script as an administrator.
Please let us know if you need any assistance.

I tried 1) and 2) from Pedro but it was unsuccessful, but the solution offered by Sumit was the correct one for me. After restarting, I check the updates and just installed 1809. Thank you

I believe since I paid for a windows operating system then it should operate. Why do I have to do all this stuff on the command promp just to keep it from crashing!?!?!?! After all I didn't pay the $200 for a program that crashes all the time! My Windows 8.1 machines don't have a crashing problem like this. Microsoft needs to fix this crap and not the customer or give us all refunds!!
