Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709 - Error 0x80242006

Win 64bit 1703 on an eMachines E732Z laptop.   1703 took many attempts to install with multi fails.  Now it's on 1703 and it has failed (19 times) to complete the Feature Update and returning the error message above.  The system still reports that it has older updates waiting!  I have already worked through the suggestions on many forums to no avail.

I have to express my extreme frustration and annoyance at these atrocious series of updates.  To date I have downloaded more that 48Gb of data at 350-420Kbps.  I have lost track of the hours spent.  The situation is rapidly becoming unacceptable.

What I would do if you haven't yet is manually install Fall Creator Version 1709 by downloading and installing Media Creation Tool from this link and then choose to Upgrade This PC Now. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m....

This the most stable method to upgrade to the new version (which you need anyway) and will bring you fully up to date with reinstalled Windows that often will solve any other problems you have.

You can use the same tool to download the ISO or create bootable media so you only need to do it once, and have the bootable media for repairs or possible Clean Install.

If there are any hurdles during the Upgrade see these steps to optimize the install as this is evidence it's corrupted: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If Version 1709 causes problems go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If problems persist you can also roll it back within 10 days at Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and block it using the Hide Updates tool or another method here to wait to see if it matures: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent...

But remember that a factory or Upgrade install are inferior installs that most enthusiasts would never run in the first place because they'd expect endless issues. Most prefer to do the gold standard Clean install from this link which has had no reported issues: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I'll keep working with you until this is resolved.

Hello,
Try resetting Windows updates using an automatic script. See:
http://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2015/12/windows...
Make sure you run the script as an administrator.

Hi Greg - I have already done this - 4.6Gb download and 2.5 hours to install and it failed at 90 something %.
This was the final straw for me and this forum is the last try before I wipe the machine and install Linux.

Already done what? I gave you a series of steps to perform which will get it installed one way or the other without fail. If the inferior Upgrade fails which no enthusiast would ever run the first place, then you have the Clean Install which is the best install of WIndows in the world. Your choice.

I have already downloaded this script and run it once.  I have even manually deleted folders and renamed them etc. manually.  Made no difference at all.

Create the bootable media from Media creation tool on another pC if necessary: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

Plug it in and run the media which is the most stable way, much more so than trying with buggy Windows Updates.

If it fails follow these steps for overcoming Version Upgrade problems: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If that fails boot the media to do the Clean Install which should get you past all difficulties as it has hundreds of thousands of others who have followed the steps in this link and never come back to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...
