Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3213986) fails to install - Error 0x80073701

Dear all

I continuously try to install the update KB3213986 on my windows 10 HP spectre labtop. It always ends with 'it failed to install'. Troubleshooting windows updates does not help, I get all aspects green, but it still does not install. The same problem when I use the standalone file KB3213986 which I downloaded from Microsoft.

Error 0x80073701 is always stated

best thanks for input

the Problem is solved see Mail:

Dear Will

You saved my day!!!!!! I exactly followed your suggestions – same result. My update status is now, up to date. Removing and re-installing KB3206632 probably did the job. I used the standalone versions of both updates, as you suggested.

Best thanks and regards

I have been dealing with the failed update with error code 0x80073701 since the date the update KB3213986 was published on Jan. 11, 2017. I looked at the CBS log file and found an assembly error. Essentially it said that a file is missing that caused failed assembly. Looking further that file was installed by the previous update KB3206632, which was installed successfully, however.

I suspect that update KB3206632 caused the problem. But I waited to see any viable solution from MS. Nope, they offered the standard non-working "methods": sfc, dism and etc. I already tried them all and no error was detected and not working.

Then finally, I took action last Sunday. I downloaded standalone update files for both KB3206632 and KB3213986. I first uninstalled update KB3206632. Then reboot. Then installed KB3206632 -- success no error. Reboot. Installed KB3213986 -- success no error. Reboot. It's done.
