Black screen with cursor after windows 10 update

Lenovo T400 laptop

The latest windows 10 updates were forced upon me, a result of these updates is now I am unable to use my laptop.

I power on the laptop

I am able to get to the login screen and enter my password.

After entering my password I am left with a black screen in which I am able to move my mouse around.

I do see the hard drive being accessed from time to time.

I can perform Ctrl, Alt, Del and I have Lock, signout and Task Manager. (power button, wifi etc.)

Clicking task manager leaves me with a black screen. (does nothing)

Starting up in safe mode goes no where.

I have safe mode in the four corners of the screen, time and date in the lower right, start button lower left.

hover over anywhere in the task bar and get the spinning circle.

Click on the start button and a window pops up, "the application is not responding. The program may respond again if you wait"

"X" "end process" and "cancel" are the options.

I am able to roll back to a previous version, however, automatic updates that I am not able to turn off force the download and update again.

This is killing my data....

How do I get this update to take without having a black screen?

I have even tried downloading windows 10, creating a USB drive and trying to install that way. Same result.

I can't seem to perform the fixes I find on the web because I am unable to access the laptop in any meaningful manor after the update.

Answer
I am going to recommend you downgrade to Windows 10 1703.

Step 1: download Windows 10 1703 from the following link:
https://tb.rg-adguard.net/index.php?sid=74a7cf5...

Step 2: create a bootable copy
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wik...

Step 3: perform a custom install
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki...

There are some compatibility issues with Windows 10 version 1709 and certain hardware or software. There is no explanation why a lot of these problems are happening in Windows 10 1709, but the release is significantly flawed. Software and Hardware that once worked in previous versions, just suddenly stops working in Windows 10 1709 after an upgrade and sometimes loses functionality or stability.

After downgrading, see how to block it so it doesn't install again:
