Windows 10 upgrade from windows 8.1 hangs

Tried to upgrade from 8.1 to 10. It checked out my pc okay and said was okay.
It installed until it got to,
YOUR PC RAN INTO A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO RESTART.
WE'LL RESTART IF FOR YOU (but it didn't).
MULTIPROCESSOR CONFIGURATION NOT SUPPORTED ERROR
It ran fine on 8.1.
I inserted by recovery USB and restored it back to 8.1
I even ran all the updates first but still did it a second time

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

I understand the inconvenience that you are experiencing. I will definitely assist you.

This issue may occur due to System file is corrupt or BIOS driver is out dated. Try the below steps and check.

Method 1.

Based on your description (Your PC ran into problem and need to restart. We will restart it for you) it usually occur due to the system file is corrupt. I would suggest you to download and create the ISO for Windows 10 and then repair your computer to check if it helps to recover the Operating System.

Download official ISO media for Windows 10 from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Insert the disk in your DVD drive and press any key to start loading Windows from the Installation Disk. Perform the following steps to perform a repair:

  1. Choose the Language and then proceed to Next.

  2. Choose Repair your computer at the Install Now screen.

  3. Click on Advanced Options.

  4. Click on Troubleshoot.

  5. Click on Startup repair

And also try the method 2 if the issue still persist.

Method 2.

For the issue (Multi-processor configuration not supported error), I would suggest you to update the chipset and BIOS drivers from the computer manufacturer’s website.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

I had this problem after installing Windows 10. Windows 8 never had a problem with multiple cores. If I disabled Hyperthreading and Multiple CPU cores in the BIOS, Windows would boot. I found this article: http://yellowonline.tweakblogs.net/blog/12043/windows-10-multiprocessor_configuration_not_supported

I disabled the CPUID Value Limit setting in the BIOS and reenabled Hyperthreading & Multi CPUs and Windows finally booted.

I had the same problem upgrading from Win7. After three manual restarts it automatically figured I could not move forward with the upgrade and automatically recovered my prior Windows 7 installation. I didn't have to do anything!

Thank you MS for thinking of this! Whoever thought of that in MS should get an award.

If you have a home built system, make sure to check with your motherboard manufacturer for updates specific to Windows 10...Gigabyte had both a chipset and Intel management  for my GA-77 motherboard.
