D:\ This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control pan

This message sometimes pops up for no reason at all:

D:\ This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.

It has started happening since I installed Windows 10. It happens randomly, but never when I am trying to open anything. Today, for example, I was just doing some work in Excel. Does anyone know why this happens?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are facing issues with Windows 10. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

The issue could occurs when "IsShortcut" string value for LNK filetype is missing in Windows Registry. It might be deleted by a 3rd party tweaking software or by you to remove the shortcut arrow from icons.

To assist you better, please provide us the below information:

  • Are you getting any error message?
  • Have you install any third party software on the computer prior to the issue?
  • Have you made any changes to the Computer prior to the issue?

I suggest you to perform the below steps and check if it helps.

1. Press Windows Key + R Key.

2. Type "regedit" without the quotes in the RUN dialog box and hit on Enter Key. It'll open Registry Editor.

Now go to following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Lnkfile

Note: Before performing any editing in registry editor, please try to take backup the registry folder on which you are going to make changes and save it on the desktop. If any occurs, then you can restore the registry folder through the backup which has been taken in the desktop. To take backup of the registry folder, refer to the link provided below.

3. In right-side pane, right-click in empty area and select New -> String Value option. Now set its name to IsShortcut.

3. Close Registry Editor and restart your Windows. Check if the issues persist.

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

The issue could have happened due to some third party software conflicts. I would request you to place the computer in clean boot and check if it helps.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 10 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note:Check the title “How to reset the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting” for reverting to normal mode.

Note: This also applies to Windows 10

Hi thesstral!

I had the same problem. Mine was that any storage device connected in my laptop, won't show how full it was and I could not check the properties or it would say 'properties for this device are not available.' When I try to open it (that includes the hdd, externa hdd flash disks and even dvd's), the error message similar to yours would come.

But I was able to fix it by three clicks here http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/file-asso-fixes-for-windows-7/

The fix is for windows 7, but it just did wonders in my win10. I hope it would help, I know how painful it is to have that problem.

Hi thesstral,

Are you able to open drives by double-clicking in File Explorer?

>> It happens randomly, but never when I am trying to open anything.

Some program is trying to run something. ProcExplorer should help you narrow it down. See: How to Find Which Program Caused An Unknown Error Message?

Actually, in re-opening ProcExplorer as an administrator, I was able to click on "Explore" next to Path:

I was also able to click on "Explore" next to Autostart location. It opened up the Registry Editor:

I will have to post the screenshot in a new comment due to size restrictions.
