Thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

It’s really unfortunate that you are facing this issue. But don't worry we will try to help you out.

These issue might be occur due to some system files missing. Please try below steps and check if it help.

    1. Check for software that may be causing issues for the Windows user interface. If you find any of the below, please remove it as a test to see if the symptom changes:
      1. IDT Audio
      2. Norton Antivirus
      3. Other software in Programs and Features that is likely to hook into the shell.
    2. Open an Administrator CMD window.  If you can’t find a way, use these steps:
      1. Press CTRL+Shift+ESC to open Task Manager.
      2. Click File > Run New Task
      3. Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”
      4. Type CMD
    3. Type the following commands at the CMD prompt:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

If dism and sfc both completed and show no remaining issues, run these commands:

powershell Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Thanks for your feedback.

Each time I try the commands, the reply is a rejection citing some error in the command or some inability to execute the command.

I am not a techie. I am at my wit's end. I cannot access the start menu, updates, the Edge browser, etc. I am also unable to remove Windows 10 and reinstall my previous OS. I know that I am in the minority of users that are experiencing problems and should be ashamed according to the Microsoft Community. I just want my computer back.

The problem with the my laptop is similar to this but not the same.

When I open that update window it quick disappears.... So I am not able to open update and security page in setting.

Similarly when I go to shut down..... It says update and shut down but it does not take update.

Please suggest something for this issue.

Hi all,  thanks for the inputs.  Found the problem....  it was having a unrecognized hard drive attached to the system.  When I disconnect it, all is well - updates work fine.  When I reconnect it, Windows will not complete the update.  Tried several times to ensure this was the problem.
