"Show App Notifications" button Cannot be Toggled on...greyed out

I cannot toggle on the "Show app notifications" button under "Notifications & actions' in system settings. At one point it was working but no longer. This means that I cannot receive any type of notifications for any Apps (all of which are greyed out as well but showing they are "on" in the Action Center nor do any notifications pop up.

Has anyone experienced that and does anyone have a fix?

Hello Lyon,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community

I understand that you are facing issue with the show app notification button after upgrading to Windows 10. As per the issue description, it seems that the issue can be caused due to any third party software conflict. Hence, let's try the following methods and check.

Method 1: Start computer in safe mode and then perform clean boot.

Step 1: Start computer in safe mode

a. When you hit the power button in Windows 8.1 (through Charms Bar), hold down the Shift key when clicking the Restart button.

b. The next screen will present you with three options. Click Troubleshoot.

c. Next, hit Advanced options followed by Windows StartupSettings from the next screen.

d. Your PC will now be rebooted to enable the advanced parameters, which include Safe Mode as well. Once it restarts, you’ll get nine options whereby the following commands apply:

  • F4 for Safe Mode
  • F5 for Safe Mode with Networking
  • F6 for Safe Mode with Command Prompt

For more information you may refer to the article mentioned below.

Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)

Step 2:  Perform Clean boot to avoid any third party software conflict.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Method 2

If issue persist try to check the system files are they working fine or not and to check that try to run System File Checker (SFC) tool.

SFC scan will scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows 8.

  1. Press Windows key and X at the same time.
  2. Choose Command Prompt (Admin) from the context menu.
  3. In the command prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
  4. Exit command prompt

Method 3

If issue persists try to create new user profile as an administrator and see if issue persists in new user profile. For creating new user profile you may refer to the steps provided in the article mentioned below.

Create a local user account in Windows 10

Hope this would help. If issue still persists post back with current status of your computer and result of the proposed suggestion, we will be happy to assist you.

Regards,

Ramesh Kumar.

Thanks, Ramesh. As it happens, just after receiving your reply, I got a call from Microsoft as I had also put in a request for tech support about a week ago. The tech spent about an hour going through pretty much everything you suggested and some more and could not come up with a solution. It has therefore been escalated to level 2 and I will be getting a call back on Monday. Much thanks for your help.

There is a conflict with my anti-virus and firewall program. If you shut it off and run MS firewall and defender, the issue is resolved.

You have to be kidding; Defender is at the bottom of the list for A/V protection.

the conflict is with Bitdefender, which is a top antivirus, firewall program. If I turn off autopilot on bitdefender, then notifications do not work. When I toggle it off, they work. Go figure.

I am using Bitdefender AV Plus as of just recently with Windows 10 upgrade due to poor Defender reviews, and the Bitdefender  program greyed out the Show App Notifications button.    The program was set to let Bitdefender auto-manage my profiles, and it was set to "Game" which greyed out the button, and other things I imagine.

Anyway, I disabled the Auto-manage Profiles option, set my profile to "Standard", and notifications are right back on.

Hope this helps some.

Try leaving Autopilot enabled;  then click on Tools button, then click on Profiles; turn on (Check Profiles), then uncheck Let Autopilot manage my profiles.  Go back to Main page and choose the Standard Profile.

I have mine setup this way with no issues.
