Question

Q: Opening HEIF files and HEVC Videos on Windows 10 This thread is locked from future replies

Very impressed with Apple being the first to adopt HEIF and HEVC on iOS 11. Only problem is, no other platform seems to support it as of now.

Even though HEVC is supported on Windows 10 out of the box, the videos don't actually plan in any app on Windows 10.

HEIF is not supported at all.

Does anyone know of any apps or programs that would let me play HEIF and iOS 11 HEVC videos on Windows? Or maybe a codec pack?

Note: I do not want to convert these images and videos while exporting to Windows; want to keep them in their native formats.

Hi Ronit,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. HEVC and HEIF files are only supported by Apple devices. Given the number of iOS 11 users, I think MS should strongly consider supporting these file formats.

That’s cool and certainly very useful. However, I belive most iPhone users would rather have Microsoft support tne new formats as they are, in general, superior to the old ones.

I don't think you really need to CONVERT HEIF-images since macOS and IOS automatically does that when these images are exported  outside of their native OS. They convert HEIF to JPG then. What's really interesting is to see how fast the HEIF-format can gain general native support on Windows OS and world leading graphic software such as Photoshop and Lightroom.

Yeah HAHansFernström, In the while we are waiting for native support on windows or some leading graphic software we still need to convert heic to jpg for Windows user :)
