Jump Lists not working in Windows 10

Hi,

After upgrading to Windows 10, I've noticed that Jump Lists are not working.

I've been used to right-click the Excel icon, and then select the last file I was working on from the list.

After the upgrade, this list is not displayed anymore

I've tried to open excel, select the file, close excel, and right-click the icon - still not working.

The same is for any other app (ie. Visual Studio).

How can that be fixed?

Thanks!

I agree - they need to re-enable the user's ability to adjust the number of items displayed within the jump list.

I have my mp3 player software pinned to my taskbar and I use (or used to use before I upgraded to Windows 10) the jump list for the program to pick out mp3s to listen to. I HAD about 30 mp3s pinned before the upgrade, but now I have maybe 10 items being listed. This is idiotic - instead of being able to pin and customize the number of items I WANT to have in a jump list, I'm being forced to limit myself to maybe 10 items instead of the 20-30 some that I had before!

Please fix this feature because ALOT of folks need that ability to customize their program interface! The jump lists are there to be useful to people, not to limit their ability to interact with the system! I'd like to be able to access my files rapidly instead of having to go hunting/pecking through folders on the system, looking for what I need at that particular moment! Yes I have alot of choices, but that's ME - and I'd rather have a small pool of things to choose from versus a "tiny puddle" of choices I'm stuck with. Sorta why some people pick choosing off the dinner menu at a restaurant versus the 8 "lunch specials" some places advertise - they want choice!

Fix this PLEASE!

I've done this to get Recent Items to show up in Quick Access and in Windows Explorer Jump List

  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items" without the quotes

  2. In Windows Explorer, make sure the Navigation Pane is visible.  If it's not, go to the Menu Bar and select View -> Navigation Pane and put a checkmark next to Navigation Pane.
  3. In Windows Explorer, go to the Menu Bar and select Home -> Pin to Quick Access:

  4. The "Recent items" folder will appear in the Navigation Pane, and you can drag it to the top of the Quick access list if you desire.

This should also put Recent items at the top of the Windows Explorer Jump List.

Now to extend this to the "Save" and "Save As" dialog box...Any hints are welcome :-).

To really tell MS about this go to Start>W>Windows Feedback.

As far as I can tell there's no group policy or registry hack to increase the number of pinned items.

I agree with your post.

I really hate it when developers try to make things "easier" for me by removing the choices available to me.

If they have to hide things from the casual user then that's fine. Just give me a way to customize or choose.

I have a similar problem.  I have the jump list enable and I am not complaining about the number of items on the jumplist.  My jump list shows up but when I click on it Windows does nothing and will not open any files, folders, etc.  I have created a files here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-start/windows-10-jump-list-on-taskbar-when-click-on-to/d82cfc59-a5d4-484c-b182-564be2fbe8e2

Basically, it goes like this for my problem:

- Upgrade is fine from 8.1 Pro to 10 Pro

- Reset, keep nothing, start somewhat fresh (not true clean install)

- Did all the Windows updates, drivers update from mfg, always create restore points

- Reinstall every 3-5 windows applications (not windows store but 3rd party apps), create restore points.  Before create restore point, reboot, make sure after reboot, after loading the 3-5 apps just install, the taskbar is working

- 1st (re)install - install Daemon Tools Lite, taskbar, right click, Jump list shows up, but when click on the pinned short cut, not opening, no action and windows not doing anything

- roll back, skip back it still does not work

- 2nd (re)install - skip Daemon Tools Lite, go along, install Chrome and Chrome apps (with App launcher). Taskbar breaks as above, restore to previous restore point, and taskbar is normal again

- Continued but this time installs other apps (MiniTool Partition 9.1, Media Player Classic, Notepad ++, Nvidia Legacy Phyx Driver, Q-Dir, Recurva, UltraISO), taskbar breaks again.

- Restore to previous point, still breaks!

In between, I have already done sfc/scannow, dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth many, many times.

Sometime sfc found corrupt files but already successfully repaired but taskbar still breaks

Try enable the admin account.  Admin account the taskbar is fine!

Try creating a new user. New User the taskbar is also NOT working like described above.

Interestingly, the Start Menu pinned program jump list exhibit similar breaking behavior.

Let me clarify, this breaking behavior in Taskbar and start menu is very specifc to Windows File Explorer, Excel and other apps pinned to task bar.  Chrome pinned shortcut on taskbar is fine.

Also you can single click on the pinned short cut on taskbar and start menu the program would open but right click to bring the jump list, the jump list would show but if you click the program or and pinned folders it would not work.

If you right click on the pinned folders/shortcut on the jump list the context menu would not show (it would have a blank rectangle)

Win 10 is great but this bug is so annoying is really to go back to something like Win 8.1 or Win 7 that everything just works.

Thanks,

Bond

With the latest update (which I initially had issues installing, but that's another story) - jump lists are now fully working for File Explorer both from the Start Menu and Taskbar - File Explorer icon. So solved for me.

I think it was (KB3081438) that resolved the issue. Installed on 15/08/2016

Hi!

I had the same problem, I discovered that it had to do with a program that I had installed: WinCDEmu (the program can mount .iso, .cdr and other extensions). So perhaps the problem appears with this kind of tools (WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Daemon tools)After uninstalling it the directories in the Jump list open normally, if I install it again they won't open.
Hope this can help!

I have this problem too. Right mouse click on Excel (or Word) on taskbar, select a pinned file and it opens. To "pin" a file just mark it as "pinned" in Excel (or Word).

I don't have a solution but I have a partial workaround. Check Settings, Personalisation, Start and make sure that "Show recently opened items in jump lists on Start or the taskbar" is on.

Now when you right click on Excel in the task bar you will see a list of recently used Excel spreadsheets. This isn't the same as seeing the list of pinned items, you'll get everything you've been to recently, but it's better than nothing.

Incidentally, I tried the regedit described in this thread, it didn't do anything for me.

Microsoft, PLEASE fix jump lists so that I see pinned files and only pinned files, like I did in Win 8 and 7. I don't want to see casual, one use files cluttering up my lists.

EDIT

Upon reflection... my memory tells me that I only saw pinned files when right clicking Excel on tool bar, not pinned plus recently used. However, I'm not certain, so maybe jump lists are now working correctly? Either way I'd prefer to see only pinned. Or an option to choose.

Thanks,

John
