How to delete the Background images in Windows 10

Original title: Recently used backgroungs

Hi. How can I delete custom images I recently used as my screen background? They show up when you go to personalization setting but you don't have an option to remove them making the default backgrounds invisible thus you can't use them anymore.

Hi Karen,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

My apologies for the delayed response.

I understand that you are unable to delete the custom images used as screen background. I will certainly help you.

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it resolves the issue.

1. Right click on the desktop screen and select Personalize.

2. Choose Background and click on Browse under Choose your picture.

3. Now you can delete the pictures from its location or choose the path where those pictures are saved.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help.

Thank you.

Select five new choices and those old choices will go away. :)

Not working sir. Especially when you have a Microsoft account with settings synced over. The background stays on the personalization image options.

No need for a screenshot here: this is simply the MRU for that area.  Selecting five new images will cause the previous images to roll off the end and no longer be displayed there. :)

Here's the screenshot. What I would like to do here is to remove the second image which is my previous background on my windows account so all the default background appears. The image doesn't exist on my computer as it only appeared when I logged in to my windows account.
I have used different backgrounds before that the default images are gone and no longer an option, I can't find them. They are only there again when I had to reset my computer for other issues. So as you can see If you want CUSTOM backgrounds to be removed a reset seems to be the only solution!

I'm confused.  Here's a simple solution.

Select the swimming image as your desktop background.

Now select the running image as your desktop background.

Now select the Windows 10 logo image as your desktop background.

Open MSPaint.  Make a smiley face.  Save it out as one file.  Go to the Settings :: Personalization :: Background page again.  Browse to that smiley face.  Set that as your background.

That bad fifth "trees" image should be gone now.  Is it?

But again the smiling face will stay there if I then change it. The issue is to remove all custom background so all the default, pre-installed backgrounds appear.

You can get to and reselect the default pre-installed backgrounds by browsing to:

 C:\windows\web\Wallpaper

and then selecting them there. :)
