Default Display for Applications Under Win10 and Dual DIsplays

I bought a new laptop last week and upgraded to Win10 over the weekend.  One thing I noticed that works differently is that when I open an application, like Excel, drag it to the secondary monitor, save my work, close the app, and then reopen it, it always opens on the primary monitor regardless.  I haven't seen a way to default an application to open on a specific monitor.

Is this a difference in Win10, or is there an option somewhere of which I am not aware?

Many thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.

I understand that you wanted to default an application to open on a specific monitor. I will be happy to assist you with this.

Please follow the below steps and check if that helps.

1. Open the application.

2. Re-size the window so that it is not maximized or minimized.

3. Move the window to the monitor you want it to open on by default.

4. Close the application.  Do not re-size prior to closing.

5. Open the application. It should open on the monitor you just moved it to and closed it on.

6. Maximize the window.

Please refer the below article for further help.

Hi Vijaya,

Thanks for the feedback.  I was maximizing the window before closing it, so that was indeed part of my problem.  I haven't opened all of the applications I want to have open by default on the secondary monitor, but so far it's working for all but one ... Microsoft Edge.  No matter what I do, it always opens on the laptop display, not the secondary monitor.  Is there something specific about Edge that might cause this?

Thanks again,

Tim

Microsoft Edge doesn't remember its position at all, it is a bug that hopefully they will fix in the future.
Note I'm just another user trying to help.

I have done this, and this work if I open 1 app, close and reopen (I am using excel for this test).  The problem is that if excel is open, and I click and open another workbook, it opens the new one back on the 1st monitor instead of the second monitor as intended.
