Changing Color Theme on Windows 10

Hello Community.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about two weeks ago. After work, I started to explore how I could personalize my settings. I changed the color theme to orange like in the image below.

But decided I like the monochromatic effect like below.

Here's where the quirk happens. The color theme I choose stays for a while but every so often, it reverts back to orange. Why is this happening? How can I fix this? It's pretty easy to change the theme when I want to but it's annoying when it changes when I don't want it to.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi Christian,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand the inconvenience you are facing. Let me help you in resolving the issue.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

1. Is the issue confined to particular theme or with all the themes?
2. What is the security software installed on your computer?
3. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

Follow the methods below and check if that helps:

Method 1: I suggest you to perform clean boot and then change the theme.

To know how to place the computer in Clean Boot I suggest you to follow the below link.

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Reset the computer back to Normal Mode once you are done with the troubleshooting by following the section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" from the same article.

Method 2: I suggest you to temporarily disable antivirus and then change the theme.

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Hope the information helps. Keep us posted on Windows related queries and we will be happy to assist you further.

Hello Nachappa C K.

To answer your questions,...

1. I've only changed my color theme twice. First, from the default [I think it was blue] to orange and then to grey. I haven't changed to picture themes or others so, I don't know whether the issue is confined to one or the same with all themes.

2. I used Avast with my Windows 7 but removed it using their removal tool [avastclear.exe]. I'm using Windows Defender and Windows Firewall since I upgraded to Windows 10.

3. Other than upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and installing MS Office Home and Student 2016, no, I haven't made any changes to my system.

Kindly note that the grey theme stays for a while. It just reverts back to orange after a few shut-down and start-up cycles.

I've browsed over the links you sent and it's mainly for Windows 8. I understand the two system have many similarities. Should I go ahead and follow the procedure?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I apologize for not addressing you in a timely manner. Let me help you in resolving the issue.

Let's perform a “Startup Repair” using Windows 10 bootable DVD or USB drive and check if that helps. Initiating repair from CD/DVD may have different results than earlier since the source of boot is different now. So, I would suggest to perform the repair again and check if it helps.

If you don’t have the bootable DVD or USB drive, please refer to the steps in the article given below to create one and then follow the steps given below.

Create installation media for Windows 10

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Once you have made the bootable USB or DVD drive, please follow the steps.

  1. Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 10 from it.

  2. In the ‘Windows setup’ page, select the‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.

  3. Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.

  4. Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.

You might also require to change the boot priority in BIOS in order to allow the computer to boot from CD/DVD.

Important: While scanning the hard drive if any bad sectors are found, the scanner tries to repair that sector, any data available on that might be lost.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.
