Windows 10 keeps resetting my Default Programs for .wav and internet.

Ever since the update, Windows 10 is continually resetting my default programs to Groove Music and Edge browser. Unless this is some crazy intentional thing being done by Microsoft to get me to use their software, then it's a bug.

I've reset the defaults multiple times and have chosen windows media player to play back .wav files dozens of times but it keeps resetting to Groove Music.

Also, for some reason, it doesn't respect my chosen browser either.

I've followed a few posts regarding this issue, but I think Windows 10 has a bug that's causing this.

Hi Carey,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.

To understand the issue better, I would like to know how did you set the .wav files default to Windows Media Player?  Please elaborate the steps.

For now let’s try simple troubleshooting steps and check if this helps in resolving the issue. Follow the below steps.

  1. On the Windows search bar type default program and select Default Program.

  2. Click on Default app and click on Choose default app by file type.

  3. Locate for the .wav, click next to it and select Windows media player.

If the issue still persist, if might be possible that the user account is corrupt. I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue still persist. Visit the below link to create new user account.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-10

Hope this helps. Keep posting us with the status we will be glad to help you.

Thanks for responding. I've already done what you are suggesting multiple times and it always resets after a bit.

is there something in Windows that regularly updates user profiles from the cloud?

I can try creating a new user account but that account would be purely local, yes?

Hi,

Thank you for coming back to us.

There no such things that the user profile will be updated through cloud. However, all the Microsoft account settings will be saved through cloud.

You can try creating new user account and convert the Microsoft account to local account and convert the new user account to Microsoft account. Once you are done converting the new user account to Microsoft account, transfer all your data’s/file to the Microsoft account. One you transfer all your data’s/file to the new Microsoft account, the user account will become same old account.

  1. Go to settings and click on Accounts.

  2. Click on Your Account on the left pane and click on Sign in with a local account.

  3. Enter the password and follow the on screen instruction to convert the account to local account.

Follow the below link on Sign in with a Microsoft account

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/getstarted-microsoft-account

Also follow the below steps to transfer all your data’s/file to the new user account.

  1. Open file explorer and double click on OS (C:).

  2. Go to Users and try transferring all the data’s/file to the new user account.

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

Sorry, this isn't solving the issue.

The problem is reproduceable on my end. When I open an explorer, all of my .wav files open with groove player. I change the setting in properties so that all .wav files open in windows media player.

Then, I close the explorer window.

When I open a new explorer window and check those .wav files, they are all back to pointing to the groove player.

This is also the case with these other file types

.pdf (always opens in edge instead of adobe acrobat)

.html (always opens in edge instead of chrome)

It almost seems as if microsoft is forcing me to use groove music player and the edge browser.

FYI, in the registry here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

The default key says VALUE NOT SET

Does this mean that the value isn't being set correctly?

I am having exactly the same problem.  Despite setting my default browser and PDF reader again and again, it gets reset back to the Microsoft default in a day or so.  I am using a local account to login to my desktop.

Also, I'm discovering some new data from the latest Windows update:

I encountered the same problem today. After the last update, I *continuously* get notifications stating that "An app default was reset", "An app caused a problem with the default app setting for .pdf files, so it was reset to Microsoft Edge." , also the same message about .html files.

I rolled back KB3135173 and it went away.
