Windows 10 - After log-in, Desktop, Background, and Icons do not appear - just the cursor (movable) on a black background

I just installed my Windows 10; everything seemed to go smoothly, until right after log-in.  The log-in screen appears, I put in my password, click enter, and it hesitates a moment then goes to a black/dark grey screen with no desktop, icons, or background.  The cursor appears and is movable.  I've tried going into Safe Mode (the desktop and icons appear), but I do not know how to proceed from there to find a display setting?? to change to get the desktop to appear in normal mode.  Any suggestions?

Hello David,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

You may run DISM and SFC scan and check if it helps.

Step 1:
Run DISM command.

a. Click on Start button and type cmd in search box.

b. Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

c. Type the following command and hit Enter.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Step 2:
If the issue persists, run SFC Scan. SFC scan would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

a. Click on Start button and type cmd in search box.

b. Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

c. Type the following command and hit Enter.

sfc /scannow

Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with Windows. We are glad to assist you.
Thank you.

Update to my problem -  After attempting twice to reinstall Windows 10, and still getting the black screen after log-in, I reverted back to Win 8.1.  I then removed the Comodo (free edition) Firewall and the BitDefender (free edition) anti-virus.  I then used the windows media creation tool (64-bit) to re-install Windows 10.  After downloading, installing, and providing with a log-in screen, I logged in and my desktop appeared without any problems.  I believe either Comodo or BitDefender was interfering with/not allowing the desktop to appear.  Also possible that one or the other had not allowed explorer.exe to implement....or had erroneously detected, or established, a phantom/virtual monitor and was not showing my true monitor as the Primary.  In any case, Win 10 appears to be fully functional at this time, with desktop and icons.

During this ordeal, the Microsoft Answer Desk technicians had me attempt several remedies, including (since I was originally unable to access safe mode) mashing F8 (with no success).  It turns out that my HP Pavilion has F-ll configured to bring up recovery screen, and I was able to enter safe mode, and later revert back to Win 8.1.

I believe this issue has been resolved.  Thank you for the quick response.

I also am having a similar problem.  Computer starts up, welcome screen, log in screen than i type in my password wait a few seconds and then a black screen.  My cursor is available but NOTHING else.  I can only shut down by control alt delete.  I have tried everything I can think of to get to safe mode....or any other screen but can not.  Any ideas?  This problem has only occurred after downloading windows 10.

A similar issue. After upgrading to windows 10 (from 7) the screen turns to black. At the beginning I could open an application and work on it while the background turned to black.

I have tried to change the display settings without success

I tried to recover to the windows 7, but the function did not work

Now I cannot do nothing since as I open any window (and without opening) it turns to blank (now it is brown - maybe due to the display setting changes) so I cannot access anything.

This is the second time the upgrade did fail. It is defined as very easy to go back, but not if the installation did not succeed. It looks I shall have to reinstall W7 with the original disk

Hi,

I suggest you to download the Windows 10 ISO and create a Media Creation Tool and then perform Automatic Repair.

Windows 10 ISO and create a Media Creation Tool and then perform Automatic Repair.

Refer to the following link to download Windows 10 ISO Media

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Note: Refer to the section "Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool " in the above article for creating the tool.

Automatic Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Automatic Repair scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly. Run Automatic repair and check.

Perform Automatic repair and check.

a) After you boot your computer using Windows DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

b) Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

c) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.

d) Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.

e) Click advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.

f) Select Automatic repair.

If you do not have Windows installation disc or System Repair Disc, contact the computer manufacturer.

Remove the externally connected devices, restart the computer and check.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
