Can't remove the "US keyboard" layout from the list of available layouts in Windows 10

On several systems I'm facing the following issue:

Windows+Space lists the following (language, keyboard layout) combinations:

Under Settings / Time & Language / Region & Language / Languages / English (United States) / Options the "US" keyboard layout is not listed, so I cannot remove it:

How do I get rid of that unused / useless keyboard layout?

Hello,

if you click in the French keyboard icon a remove button appear?

Thank you

Yes, but it's grayed out (even if I make the "US" layout active).

  • Go to Control Panel (Windows + X Keys together and select Control Panel)
  • Click Language applet
  • In the resultant Window click Options on the right hand side of the default language
  • Under Input Languages move the language you want to keep to the top of the list (set as default)
  • Then delete the English US Keyboard
  • Click Save, exit Control Panel and it should now be gone for good . . .

I Hope this Helps!

I hate to say, but "US keyboard" doesn't show up there:

So I can't delete it...

OK, that is really strange, please try this:

In your first screenshot move the French language up to the top by clicking 'Up'

Then Delete the English United States language

Then click 'Add a Language' and add the US French Keyboard back

This should reset your keyboard language(s)

Hurrah! This worked.

To be very specific, here's what I did:

1. move "language = French, keyboard = French" up

2. delete "language = English, keyboard = French"

3. add "English (United States)" as a new language

4. open the options for that language; the keyboard layout was preselected as "US"

5. add the French keyboard layout to the "English (United States)" input language

6. remove the "US" keyboard layout from the "English (United States)" input language

7. move the "English (United States)" input language up in the list of input languages

Now "Windows + Space" only brings up:

Hope this will work on every machine that's affected by the issue ;-)

Thanks for the help!

I still have to confirm, but I think this has had the side effect that the time on the lockscreen is now displayed in 12-hr format, instead of 24-hr...

Go to Settings - Time and Language - Change Date and Time Formats, then on Short Time and Long Time, for 24 hour clock, choose the options H:mm for short time and H:mm:ss for long time

I knew how to change this ;-)

I just didn't expect (but maybe I should've expected) the language changes to affect my custom-selected formats (and it didn't change all of them: I had to fix the short time format back to my initial value, but not the long time format)
