Desktop icon layout

I know there are threads on how to maintain icon layout position, but I find none of them to be adequate. Why can't Microsoft just add a simple feature to save and restore desktop icon positions? Or simply just not mess them all up in the first place? And no, unchecking the 'auto arrange' or 'Allow themes to change desktop icons' doesn't work. Just check the 'This PC' in the 'Desktop Icon Settings', apply, then remove it and your icon layout will be messed up. The User interface is one of the most important element of any software. The reason people put icons on the desktop is for ease and quick access to their favorite applications. Microsoft just don't seem to get that. It's something that's been bugging me ever since I started using Windows.

I would have liked to pick 'Incompetence' for 'Category', but it wasn't listed...

Simple.

Right click the desktop, click view, click align icons to grid.  Drag your icons to where you want them.

Do not auto arrange icons unless you want them on the left side in columns.

I use Medium icons.

Do not use the File Explorer to do this stuff.

As mentioned in my initial rant, that doesn't work. At least not for me (legit Windows 10 with all the latest patches). To see if it really works on your side:

- right click desktop, click 'Personalize'

- click 'Themes'

- click 'Desktop icon settings'

- add a desktop icon you don't already have

- click apply

- click ok

Repeat procedure to remove icon you just added. For me, it re-aligns all the icons in spite of 'auto arrange' and 'Allow themes to change desktop icons' being checked off.

That is a simple solution. I have a slightly different issue. My desktop/laptop icons all arrange on the top of my  screen going off the edge. I can drag them into place along the left side, if I can see them all. If I select  "Auto arrange" or "Align to Grid" they all fly  up to the top of the screen in one row and off the edge. A week ago I was in a lengthy chat room trying to resolve this issue and one that leaves my "RUN" command empty  after each use instead of displaying recent uses. the summary of that service request is 1415646793. I have run an SFC scan and used a WIN 10  repair tool with no change. I am running Window 10 64 bit Version 1709, Build 16299.248. Let me know  if there is a different forum I should post this issue.

The first thing that you did not read was do not use Auto Arrange.  That is causing your problem.

Are you using a tablet in Tablet mode?

I read it - after I tried Auto and Grid align. Align to Grid throws them all to the top. By not showing icons on the desktop-and then showing them again, about half line up on the left site of the screen. Most are in a top row and out of sight. This is desktop mode on a Laptop.

Did you drag them to other places on the screen?

After doing that restart and see if they stay there.

No - They rearrange along the top of the desktop screen as before I manually moved them. .
