Find my device

When I use 'Find my device' in my Microsoft Account, it says my desktop is in Mumbai, India. I am in Canada, and I am looking right at, but not using, my desktop computer.  My computer is about 10 years old.  Do I have a problem?

(I chose the Windows category, because none of the others seem like a good fit)

Hi John,
I'm Independent Advisor not Microsoft employee or support person. But I'm in contact with Windows developers since 1995 - as a one of the best Windows beta-testers till 2009 when program was closed, as an MVP in 2005-2017 including Windows System & Performance nomination. So I have deep enough Windows knowledge and you may trust me. It's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you.

Does your PC show your location correctly? If yes, this may be fault in some geolocation database the account's server use.
And please check the location you've sign-in from.

Please ask your provider to correct geolocation data in IP-address database. Location is determined by IP address. Possibly your provider started using some addresses allocated to India previously and did not make change in databases yet.

The exact same thing is happening on my laptop. Have you figured it out? It says the last known location for my laptop is in India and can't find it when I try "Find my device" and the computer is on right in front of me. My internet originates in Toronto. Everything works fine, but if I ever get it stolen, I'll never find it that way! I am concerned I have been hacked.

Hello, Gbwls68. First, I should advise you I’m not an expert. I’m the person who asked the question initially.   I have 3 devices – desktop plus 2 notebooks. From my desktop, I was able to turn Location “ON” on one of the notebooks. So I would say the answer to your question is ‘Yes’. Unfortunately, I am not able to offer you any advice as to how to solve your problem.

I hope you have success with your problem.

Hello, Brent. I haven't yet been able to solve the problem. "Find My Device" still thinks my computer is in India, even though I am in Canada and I'm using it to respond to you.

Hey I managed to fix this. Your response to Gbwls... above got me searching for location settings.

Here's what I did:

Settings --> Privacy

- Make sure location is on (It should say "location for this device in on")

- Then under Default Location, choose Set default. A map will come up and you can type in your address.

I think this worked (because the India thing is gone mainly), but when I use Find My Location, it doesn't show my exact address, but it does show the node that my internet is connected to. It's the physical box where I assume all the neighborhood fiber optics connect.

Still not ideal if you are looking for a stolen laptop, but it gives the neighborhood location at least. Perhaps authorities have more access, and it's probably good it doesn't show exact location for privacy reasons. I was only concerned because of the India location, as a lot of scams and hackers originate there.

All of my computers show them to be located in Mumbai.  I cannot change the location.

It also says the battery is dead, but some of them are desktops.

Can't get any help from Microsoft..
