asus eee pc battery issue

i bought a replacement battery for an asus eee pc. unplugged, i power the pc on. the power button lights up and the screen comes on, which indicates juice is flowing from the new battery to the pc, but after a few seconds the pc shuts down. if i plug in the adapter, the pc boots but tells me no battery is detected. go figure. any ideas? thanx
The battery is either defective or not being charged. You can find out by measuring the mains current while the battery is supposedly being charged. To do so requires special equipment - ask your friendly electrician!

I don't think so. As a qualified electrical engineer I am quite familiar with batteries and chargers, and what can go wrong with them.

P.S. You did not really formulate a question. You simply said "Any ideas". I gave you an idea!

My suggestion is the same as before: That the battery new battery is not being charged. There is actually an easy way to find out. Touch the power pack after "charging" the new battery for half an hour. It should be quite warm.

It is also possible that the new battery is OK but that the charging circuit inside your laptop is defective. It would not charge the old battery and it won't charge the new battery. I had one of these a few months ago.

Bear in mind this is a Windows Support Forum, your problem is hardware and has nothing to with Windows.

However you have in part answered your own question. A "cheap battery on Amazon" is hardly going to be trustworthy in the 1st place. A major mistake to make is "I bought a **** so it cannot be that" as the highest failure rate is when it is new.

All batteries should be charged before use so your initial action of "without the PC being plugged in" was not appropriate. Yes most do have some charge and no I could not say doing what you did killed it but if the system cannot detect the battery it is most likely faulty. Leave it on charge for a day without turning on the computer as see if the batery will take a charge.
