The Windows 10 Touch Keyboard is not using the Standard Keyboard Layout after upgrading to 1709 - How to fix this?

I was running Windows 10 with the Touch Keyboard configured to use Standard Keyboard layout (giving me an on screen query keyboard). Following the latest upgrade to 1709 this has stopped working and the Standard Keyboard layout option is no longer appearing in Settings.

until ms solve this, i replaced my tabtip files with the older files from the windows.old directory. i've copied the following directories:
"C:\Windows.old\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink"  to -> "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink"
and "C:\Windows.old\‏‏Program Files (x86)‎\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink"  to ->  "C:\‏‏Program Files (x86)‎\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink"

that brings back the older touch keyboard from build 1703 with the full keyboard layout for non-english region layouts.

i copied the directories using command prompt from windows
recovery since the files are in use in normal windows boot.

I will try this later. Thanks!

Let us hope Microsoft doesn't maliciously block this workaround first chance they get.

Reading everything, I found following solution:

- combination language NL and keyboard US (standard, not international) gives as result:

  • keyboard options working: Standard keyboard, little, position, pencil
  • text suggestion working

- combination language with different keyboard (US International, RU, etc.) gives as result:

  • keyboard options working: little, position, pencil. Not working (grey): Standard keyboard
  • text suggestions working

When you want use the combination: a different language + keyboard not US standard + standard keyboard, you need copied the following directories using command prompt from windows:

  • "C:\Windows.old\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink"  to -> "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink"
  • "C:\Windows.old\‏‏Program Files (x86)‎\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink"  to ->  "C:\‏‏Program Files (x86)‎\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink"

Keyboard is changed by:

  • settings touch keyboard>language>select language>options
  • Control panel>Language

In general:

  • touchscreen keyboard acts a little bit slower, but for me acceptable
  • swiping does not work?
  • Better solution? Setting is more easy, but the functionality is less. I hope that Microsoft will improve the touch keyboard in the future...

Is anybody from Microsoft looking at this issue? This is a real problem and needs fixing!

In the mean time how can people prevent Windows 10 Home from upgrading to 1709?

Hi,

We acknowledge the issue that you're experiencing with the recent updates. We are aware of this and currently working on a fix with that matter. The option to prevent the updates from installing on your device is not yet available, but what we can suggest is that, you delay/defer updates for a period of time. Deferring updates will prevent you from getting the latest Windows features as soon as they're available.

To know more details on how you can defer upgrades, you may refer to Andre Da Costa's answer posted on this thread.

If the provided steps above didn't work for you, we encourage you to submit your issue using the Feedback Hub. You can either vote an existing submission or submit a new issue. When you submit a feedback item we gather additional details and information about your issue that will help determine what’s causing it and address it. Feedback items regularly receive Microsoft responses on the submissions in the Feedback app so you can see what we are doing about your feedback. Please revisit frequently to see the status of your feedback items.

For more information on Feedback Hub, see our support article and YouTube video.

In order to submit new feedback, please follow these steps:

1. On a Windows 10 device, search for “Feedback Hub” in Cortana search, then launch the app.
2. Navigate to Feedback in the left menu, then press + Add new feedback.
3. Select the Problem, and share any details you think are relevant, and choose an appropriate category and subcategory.
4. Important: If possible, reproduce the problem(s) after clicking Begin monitoring (or Start capture) near the end of the form; Stop monitoring when you’re done.
5. Once you’ve completed the form and monitoring, click Submit.
6. Click Continue using Feedback Hub.
7. Click My feedback at the top, then find the item you submitted. (it may take a while to appear)
8. Open the item you submitted, then click Share.

9. Click Copy link, then paste the link here in your response. (it will look like https://aka.ms/>)

Hello,

I unknowingly summarized my points here:

answers.microsoft.com/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/fall-creators-update-touch-keyboard/

And I don't give the fix much hope. This isn't technical bug, it's mostly bad design. What was wrong with the old keyboard anyway?
