Taskbar problems kb-5003214

Hi,

After installing kb5003214( build 19043.1023) the taskbar went nuts on one of my units, a Surface Book 2. The Lenovo desktop survived.

Sytem icons are there at start up but as soon as starting any application they disappear.

Pinned app icons stay as they should.

After a while the system icons re-appear but then doubled with copies of the pinned icons on top. These disappear when hoovering with pointer, and after a short while also the system icons are gone again.

Any good suggestions on this one?

Have removed the update.

Running on Insider, now on OS19043.985

I had the exact same issue. I uninstalled KB5003214 and now the taskbar icon corruption/disappear issue goes away. I hope Microsoft fixed this issue in the next build. Reverted and am now on Build 19043.985 which is very stable.

Exactly the same problem here. Uninstalling kb5003214 has no effect.

If I change "News and Interests" options to "turn off" then I get the behaviour previously reported in this item. Turning "News and Interest" options back to "Show icon only" restores the taskbar icons.

Uninstalling KB5003214 might not be possible for everyone.
The problem only occurs if three conditions are met:
1.) The new “News and Interesting Topics” toolbar is switched OFF.
2.) The display settings is different from 100% (probably to 125% on Full HD laptops).
3.) KB5003214 is installed.

So we could better choose to switch/change one of the 3 conditions.
1.) The new “News and Interesting Topics” toolbar, can be turned back on, with just icons.
This has the least negative impact in my opinion, and we could live with it.

This is a common problem on Insider builds. I have 2 Insider laptops. 1 has the issue, the other doesn't. I've never quite figured out what the difference is.

I' ve got the same problem on an Acer Swift 3: see screenshots:

or the info icons vanish from time to time:

I have two monitors and text scaled to 125% on this, the first monitor.

Sometimes it helps to switch "News and Interests" on and off or to show "symbol only".

I hope there will be a fix soon.

Thanks and regards, Ralf

You will see this if:

- KB5003214 is installed

- News and Interests on the taskbar is turned off, and

- Your DPI scaling (Settings|System|Display|Scale and layout is other (larger?) than 100%

Change any one of those, and the problem goes away. I found the most useful option to

be uninstalling KB5003214. I have zero interest in the News and Interests widget.

This problem not only persists with the June patch Tuesday update (KB5003637), but it now extends to 20H2 and 2004 in addition to 21H1. As if that weren't bad enough, this is no longer an optional update. If you uninstall it, it automatically re-installs itself unless you shut off automatic updates completely.

KB5003637 is supposed to be a security patch. New features, let alone ones that don't work and

break things that do, have no business being in a security patch!!!

You can uninstall KB5003637 and then block its re-installation using wushowhide.diagcab, but that's a lousy solution. You'll be missing the security patches in that update.

This has been always like this - if the optional quality update isn't installed, the next patch Tuesday contains the quliaty update fixes+security updates.

Windows 10 update servicing cadence - Microsoft Tech Community

  • The “C” and “D” releases occur the third and fourth weeks of the month, respectively. These preview releases contain only non-security updates, and are intended to provide visibility and testing of the planned non-security fixes targeted for the next month’s Update Tuesday release. These updates are then shipped as part of the following month’s “B” or Update Tuesday release.

"News and Interests" is a new feature introduced in the optional 21H1 - a FEATURE update. "News and Interests" is NOT a quality update nor a security update. Yet there it is now on 20H2 and 2004 after KB5003637, introducing new problems in those releases that did not previously exist. That's just poor release management.

Yes! Agree, Microsoft has still not fixed it. So disappointing.
