Windows 10 screen randomly goes grey

Original title: Random Grey Screen?

I'm getting increasingly frustrated with my laptop, as it randomly goes completely grey, with some lines. When I move the mouse, see one line move horizontally, when I hit the Windows button, the menu that pops up normally, comes up as a blackish-blue rectangle. It happens at random, and lasts from anywhere between 5 seconds and 5 minutes. Anyone with a similar issue or solution?

I suggest you to Start computer in safe mode and check if it helps in resolving your issue:

1. Type Settings in the search box on the desktop, select Settings.

2. Here select Change pc settings and then General.

3. Scroll down to Advanced startup, click Restart now.

4. Click on Troubleshoot, Advanced options, and Startup Settings.

5. Click Restart, select Safe mode and then press Enter.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to update graphics drivers and check if it helps:

1. Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.

2. Search for Display Adapters and expand it.

3. Right click on the graphics driver and select Update driver software.

Well, I tried this, and I updated my graphics drivers before hand. Safe mode has left my PC in a worse state. Nothing will work, no audio, no internet, no connections, my screensaver didn't load, the grey lines still pop up.

Update: All that happens now is when I open the laptop, I just get a screen that looks like I'm staring at a cloud, a light gray nothing. That's all, it doesn't go away.

Hi Jack,

We understand that this might be causing inconvenience for you.

I see you telling that the problem is still appearing on Safe Mode. I guess the problem might be with the display screen. I appreciate if you could test this by connecting an external display. This will give us the clue on the root cause.

To connect another monitor to your PC

Locate an available video port on your PC.
Plug in the matching cable from the second monitor into the port.

Windows should automatically detect and install the monitor.

Keep posted if you require further assistance.

I appreciate the answer, though I figured out the problem. Having seen other people deal with the same thing, it's clear to me that the issue is a broken or loose video cable. So, it looks like I'll need to be getting a 0 size screwdriver to take a look at it, and see if it's loose or if I need a new cable.
