Interactive Services Detection Locks Computer

From time to time, I get this popup.  If I select 'Ask me later', it pops up a few minutes later.  If I select 'View the message', the computer totally freezes.

The only escape I've found is to use the power button.  Even control alt delete has no effect.

I have no idea what program is making this request, so I have no idea how to stop it.

Any suggestions?

Hi Walt. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Here's how to Troubleshoot the error: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/patricka/2011/...

Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

If nothing else helps then run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This solves many problems and will also bring it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

But remember that Factory or Upgrade installs are inferior installs which most enthusiasts won't even run because they'd expect endless issues. Consider doing the Clean Install in this link which compiles the best possible install that will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

There is also an automated Refresh that reinstalls WIndows while shedding corrupting factory bloatware, saves your files, but doesn't clear the drive to get it cleanest: https://www.howtogeek.com/265054/how-to-easily-...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for all the great info.  I haven't had time to go through all of it yet.

The popup started popping up every few minutes so I disabled the notification.
Then, when I found time, I set up the event viewer custom view and turned the notification back on.
The popup hasn't popped up since. Go figure.

So, I went ahead and moved on to your Wiki article.

On step 4, I only have two things that start with task manager startup and my startup folder is empty.
I couldn't find how to Hide all MS Services in the task manager so I'm not sure where that stands.

I have Malwarebytes and run it somewhat regularly. Adware cleaner is new to me, it's a keeper.

I do a scannow whenever something is acting odd.

I'm going to wait and see if the popup re-occurs and catch it in the event viewer before taking any further action.

Thanks again,
Walt

The Services tab is in msconfig, not Task manager. Tick the box there to Hide all MS Services. Then disable all.

The only services running there are Emsisoft Protection, Intel Rapid Storage, Intel PROset Monitoring, and Macrium.

I doubt any of those should be trouble but if the popup comes back, that where I'll head first to see what's what.

I would uninstall any 3rd party antivirus and try running only built-in Defender which gives adequate protection, least issues, and is from Microsoft who knows how to protect their OS best. If you want the best on-demand scanners install and run Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner free scanners.

Otherwise none of those need to be running at Startup. The Intel drive monitoring tool is OK but we see problems with all startups at one time or another so I don't allow them strictly for convenience sake, they must be absolutely needed here.
