[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

Partially Fixed as of June 26, 2018.

  • Please Update to Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165+
  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes.

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)  >Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

As i told, you wont going anywhere until manufacturers give presure on their back. Well here is a thing, they are selling tons of devices anyway. Why should they bother?

This is a result of nowaday sheepish end customers. We deserved it.

And anyone deserves this who still does not return his notebook.

It's not about being a bother to fix a big, it's about scale and impact.

From the original context of this thread, and the repro video that was shared, it's a delay in right-clicking a UI item.  The functionality still works, there's just a slight delay.

Is the problem worse than that?  Is there additional context that isn't included in the original post of this thread that highlights a broader issue?

If there are more symptoms of this issue and it's bigger than currently described in the OP, please update/share as appropriate.

Thank you for the response!

It's not only the desktop right-click. While using an affected laptop, it seems to periodically lock up in a similar way (GPU switching), for no real reason as the tasks being performed shouldn't require the second GPU to wake up at all.

If you don't mind a bit of a read, I wrote more about some symptoms here.

It's not easy to give exact repro steps because the issue itself is nebulous, but using an affected laptop for more than a minute will make the issue clear as day, and it negatively affects the experience. Personally I've found myself using my weaker MacBook for general use even though I greatly prefer Windows, because the stuttering is so frustrating without running a hack to keep the second GPU active.

Is Problem worse than described: Yes, problem is not only right clicking. Op will update soon i guess.

Impact level: Customers of every manufacturer who are using following configuration:

  • Lastest gen notebooks with intel+nvidia graphics card which uses optimus
  • Windows 10 (Updated)

Problems: Freezing on openning folders, openning various applications, fast-switching apps, task manager, battery indicator, start menu, settings, list goes to infinity.

How to mitigate: Turn off all the animations and visual effects. Removing some entries on redegit etc.

How to completely remove the bug: Only possible way to do this is disable dgpu on device settings every-time you do not need dgpu, re-enable it if you need it again. Thousands of people doing this right now. Solution is not feasible and impossible when you are using 2nd display.

Op, can you update first post according Jason suggestions.

Edit: Youtube video provided on reddit shows other repros causing freeze and it is just a very small subset of all repro.

All go on the feedback app in windows and post your frustration, do this every day until we have a fix.

As D_Steve595 and incxbx already mentioned, this bug does not only affect the right-click on the desktop.

Popular actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are, from my view:

- Right click on desktop

- Left click on battery-icon in task-bar

- Opening Chrome-browser

- Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)

- Opening system control panel

- Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)

This issue causes your system to lock up on any of the actions mentioned above, which can be really annoying when watching videos on a second monitor, listening to music or just browsing the net.

Especially concerning the background of most of the people having this issue (expensive Gaming-Laptop with high-class equipment like recent i7 7700 and GTX 10X0) this is quite a big deal if those laptops are sold as fast gaming machines...

Could this problem probably be elevated to a higher priority?

You can add "loading a new tab in Firefox" to that list. Which is how I noticed the problem on my laptop (Razer Blade GTX 1060) as it makes it especially annoying.

The problem is not just that the system freezes, it's that even the *mouse* freezes as well, which makes the experience especially jarring.

I made a little video that mainly showcases audio lags but also the stutters experienced during general usage (opening tabs/loading pages, opening new windows). Those stutters might seem small and insignificant at first but they pile up quite fast and make for a very frustrating experience in the end. One half-second stutter is nothing but a half-second stutter every few seconds comes out to minutes and hours of lost time.

Here is the vid
