[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

Partially Fixed as of June 26, 2018.

  • Please Update to Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165+
  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes.

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)  >Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

What build are you on? If you run `winver.exe`, what's on the second line?

My laptop's screen is broken and it is at the repair service now. But I have used nearly all versions from 1607 to 1703. I was on the 2 previous Insider Build. I am on fast ring.

The thing is, I got my hands on a GS63VR 7RF from MSI. I have formatted the device and intsalled 1703 RTM from scratch. Updated BIOS, drivers etc. and the problem is still there.

I will get my laptop back in monday, update to latest Insider, and to the latest NVIDIA driver. I don't think it will be solved but I will give it a try.

That's definitely strange, general consensus is that it's fixed on 1703. It was fixed by build 15042 onwards on my GS63VR. Maybe it's something you're doing after installing Windows? What's your process?

For GS63VR 7RF, I actually did an upgrade from 1607 sorry for misinforming. I will install 1703 RTM on my GS43VR when I get it back and inform you.

I usually follow those steps:

  • UEFI Install OS
  • Chipset software install with -overall command
  • Intel HD Graphics Install
  • NVIDIA install.

Try leaving out the chipset and Intel graphics drivers, Windows Update actually has the proper versions of both.

I have reset GS63VR 7RF via Windows itself. Got 1703 as fresh. But the problem is still there.

I will recieve my  GS43VR 7RE today and update it to latest Insider but I don't think that it will solve the problem.

After a fresh boot, is the power LED red? And when the stutter occurs, does it turn orange/amber for a second then go back to red?

Hi all I have the same issue with my new MSI GS63 Vr, mini freezes that basically occur when I'm watching online videos. I've tried the following:

1)I updated all my drivers(wifi, video, sound) and checked windows updates

2) I made the gtx1060 my default card for each application

3)I Disabled the realtek sound card.

Nothing has worked.

Latency Mon shows problems related to the Killer wify card....no other clues.

It's crazy I've spent 1600 eur on a laptop and I'm not able to watch youtube....
