BSOD Critical Process Died While Gaming

Yesterday I started getting a BSOD of Critical Process Died while gaming. It doesn't happen right away, and it seems to vary in time, but it always seems to happen within 5 minutes or so. Also, it always freezes a bit before and a few times I have had a window pop up asking me if I wanted to end the process for Windows as it was not responding. Then it BSOD.

The first BSOD I received, actually, was a Bad System Config info error. Reformatting and putting Windows 10 on a fresh install appears to have fixed that, only to lead to the Critical Process Died errors I am getting now.

-I have run scannow but was mostly met with this message after it verified 100% "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operations." In safe mode once I was able to get scannow to go completely and it said it fixed some corrupted files.
-I have run chkdsk
-I am unable to run DISM. Every attempt just gives me Error 3. One time I got error 50.
-I have deleted all partitions on this harddrive and reformatted, installing a new Windows 10.

My specs:
Motherboard: MSI z97 Gaming 5
Processor: i7 4790K
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
Video Card: 1070ti Gigabyte
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2
Hard Drives: Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB (this has Windows on it); WDC WD10EZEX; Toshiba HDWD120.

The only new piece of hardware is the Samsung SSD. I installed that a couple of weeks ago and only began having issues yesterday.

I'd be grateful for any advice or help anyone can provide. Let me know if you need more information.

Checking out the event viewer, I see a bunch of DCOM errors 1084 and 1115.

Here is a link to all the errors: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/124ULsWjUUSU9gnTN05dh4qkNR0yMkFSrx-C1CHRzE9Q/edit?usp=sharing

Let me know if there is a better way for you all to look at the information. Thanks.

I have been testing with DOTA 2 and have just received this error while the game was freezing this time:

AsyncCaption_t::LoadFromFile_Internal():
Invalid file id for resource\subtitles\subtitles_crystalmaden_english.dat.

I am going to try a new game now to see if the problem persists there as well.

Hi awott10

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

I would start by making sure the latest BIOS Update has been installed:

http://download.msi.com/bos_exe/mb/7917v1D.zip

Chipset drivers June 2018
http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/intel_chipse_9_...

Apply these updates to see if they help.

Other things you can try:

Try simplifying your configuration by keeping only your mouse and keyboard attached, that means:

Disconnecting multiple display monitors.

Remove discrete video cards, use the on-board graphics if your motherboard supports it.

Swap out memory modules - a RAM module might be corrupt - you can also ensure RAM sticks are installed slots 1 and 3. Your RAM modules might be corrupt, try scanning them for errors.
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/use-the-memory...

If you have more than one hard disk installed, disconnect all except the target disk where Windows 10 will be installed.

Reset your BIOS Defaults.
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/reset-pc-bios-...

Disconnect all external devices, since connected devices can sometimes confuse setup.

Information in the above link is sourced from a trusted Microsoft MVP blog.

Hi awott10
I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. I am here to work with you on this problem.

I am assuming you are able to get into your computer. If not, do let me know.

To know what exactly is causing the crashes, I need to analyze minidumps generated by crashes with WinDBG. WinDBG is the only tool which can do end to end complete analysis of ..dmp files generated by BSOD (Blue screen of death).

Go to C:\Windows\Minidump
Zip the contents of the folder corresponding to date and time of your crashes.
Upload the content to Onedrive or any other file sharing site for me to locate the problem.

If you are uploading Memory.dmp also, please upload it separately as the size of memory dump is very large.

If you don't get minidump files in above folder, you will need to enable minidump generation. If you need help to generate Minidump - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Do let me know if you have any more question or require further help.
Sincerely yours,
Vijay A. Verma @ https://excelbianalytics.com

Hi,

My first suspicions would be the network devices (hardware) or the drivers you are using (either WiFi or Ethernet). Update the drivers using the methods below.

Troubleshoot blue screen errors <-- read this link
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/troubleshoot-blue-screen-errors

Be sure to check with the system maker's support, their on-line documentation and
drivers, and ask in their forums about any known issues - the unit should still be under full warranty. As OEM the system maker is responsible for the proper operation of both the hardware and Windows.

Remove ALL power then reseat the cards, memory, and cables (on both ends when possible).

Keep in mind that the odds are hardware is involved and you can't fix hardware with software.

We can analyze the minidumps if you make them available from the OneDrive or other file sharing sites (such as MediaFire). If you have problems uploading the minidumps copy them to the Desktop or the Documents folder and upload them from there.

==================================================

This utility makes it easy to see which versions are loaded :

Run DriverView - set VIEW to Hide Microsoft drivers - update those without
Dump in their names (and update BIOS and chipset drivers).

DriverView - Free - utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded
on your system. For each driver in the list, additional useful information is
displayed: load address of the driver, description, version, product name,
company that created the driver, and more.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html

For Drivers check System Maker as fallbacks and Device Maker's which are the
most current. Right Click the Start Button - Device Manager - Display Adapter - write down the make and complete model of your video adapter - double click - Driver's
tab - write down the version info. Now click UPdate Driver (this may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers) - then Right Click - Uninstall - REBOOT this will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat that for Network - Network Card (NIC), Wifi, Sound, Mouse and Keyboard
if 3rd party with their own software and drivers and any other major device drivers
you have.

Now go to System Maker's site (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) (as rollback) and
then Device Maker's site (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI as examples) and get their
latest versions. (Look for BIOS, Chipset, and software updates at System Maker's
site while there.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - Right Click - RUN AS ADMIN -
REBOOT after each installation.

Always check in Device Manager - Drivers tab to be sure the version you are
installing actually shows up. This is because some drivers rollback before the
latest is installed (sound drivers particularly do this) so install a driver - reboot
- check to be sure it is installed and repeat as needed.

Repeat at Device Makers - BTW at Device Makers DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER -
check manually by model.

Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

====================================================

Memory tests do not catch all errors such as mismatched memory (possible even
for sticks that appear to be identical) and when faster memory is placed in system
behind slower memory. So it is best to also swap sticks in and out to check for
those even if all memory tests fail to show a problem.

To test RAM check here - let it run 4+ hours or so.  <-- best method
www.memtest.org

MemTestX86 - Test RAM With
http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/14201-memtest86-test-ram.html

For the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool.

Type in Cortana's search box ->  Windows Memory Diagnostics
at top of list - click it. in Windows 8/8.1/10 the name is "Windows Memory
Diagnostic".

================================================

After doing ALL the updates you can, and if the issue continues, then run
DriverVerifier.

Driver Verifier can help find some BSOD issues :

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff545448%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

WINKEY + X - RUN - type in -> verifier /reset      hit enter to disable

Use BlueScreenView to see if there is a driver specified in the error message.
Also check with MyEventViewer at the time of the BlueScreen.

If DriverVerifier creates a minidump upload it and post the link here so we can
analyze it.

Hope this helps.

If using an SSD for the Windows drive check with its maker for methods to test it.

If using a conventional hard drive use these methods to check it (be sure to check cabling).

Type in Search box - Control Panel
Go to Security and Maintenance - then unfold Maintenance - look at Drive status.

I have now tested a few different games, all of which end in that same BSOD.

I then booted on my hold hard drive and played the same games. No crashes at all.

So, is it possible that the new SSD could be the source? I can't even boot into it anymore, nor access the files by booting to my other drive. Windows says it needs to be formatted. I even tried swapping cords that the two were attached to, but it was the same result.

As for checking it, it's a Samsung 860 Evo. I've downloaded their software and it states the drive is Good, otherwise I can just look at its SMART data, which I'm not sure how to interpret. The Status on each category says "Okay," however. IF you need to see specifics, please let me know.

Also, and I'm not sure this matters at all or could be the source, but could the installation media be a culprit at all? Would making a new one with a fresh download work? I used a USB, the first time I have, could that factor at all? Am I better off burning it to a disc?

Thanks a ton for all of your help so far.
