All apps are gone!

Hey everyone,

Hope you're having a nice day.

I have got a problem that needs fixing and would like some assistance...

So yesterday I came to see that some apps, specifically Microsoft/Windows 10 apps, were hidden from the taskbar even though they were pinned. Those apps were Edge, Mail, and Groove. They took up their space in the taskbar, however the icons were not there and pressing them would do nothing. In either case I continued surfing the web.

Then today I see those apps completely gone, and going to Start I see literally no W10 apps. I only see their notifs in the notifs panel and it showcases com.microsoft.appname.codes etc....

So my question is, how can I get them back? Some are essentials like Mail and Settings. Should I use a restore point automatically created 1 week ago? Or just troubleshoot in a better way?

Oh yeah and, the Troubleshoot Apps in Settings doesn't work because I don't even have Settings working!

Hi Mohamed,

The challenge that you are experiencing with your missing apps can occur due to several reasons such as, corrupted system files, missing system files, etc. To better assist you, kindly answer the following questions:

  • When did the issue start? Were there any changes made to your computer before the issue started?
  • Which version of Windows 10 are you using? To check, kindly type winver on the search bar, then press the Enter key.

If there were changes made to your computer before the issue started, we recommend that you restore your computer to an earlier point. To do so, kindly follow the steps under Restore from a system restore point in this article: Recovery options in Windows 10. Your personal files won't be affected by the system restore, but the apps, updates, and drivers that were installed after that restore point will be removed.

We look forward to your response.

Hello Joshua,

I'm not sure if this would affect my system but from my post on "Adware, everywhere!" I uninstalled Chrome before yesterday then reinstalled it (I also uninstalled these and that applies to Chrome's extensions I have installed; Musixmatch for YT, Adblock for YT, Google Keep, Kaspersky Internet Protection, Dark Theme for Google), but will this affect it?

Kindly in answer to your questions:

1. The issue started before yesterday. The changes that happened right before this issue are described above.

2. I'm using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit v1703 build 15063.674 and I'm not subscribed in the Insider Community whatsoever.

Extra questions I may need an answer for:

1. Will uninstalling an app from either C (Local Disk):/Program Files or C:/Program Files (x86) affect native Windows 10 apps?

2. Will a restore point affect some recently installed desktop apps (I installed Hitman Pro yesterday)?

3. Based on me finally removing the mess of an adware havoc yesterday, will a restore point restore all the ads/adware graphical layer I was bothered from? (check above question from yesterday {special thanks to Carol})

4. Can't I restore those apps without a restore point (maybe by cmd or something)

Thanks, have a good day, and I hope I receive a fast update

Hey everyone,

So today a weird thing popped up on me.

I was attempting to open a photo to see the native W10 Photos app opening with not even the slightest issue, and everything was functioning. I expected, as all apps were gone, the Windows Photo Gallery from earlier Windows versions (Vista and 7) or alternatively Paint (for whatever reason)

I couldn't see it, though, actively present on the taskbar or on Start, but I could see it by the app view in Alt+Tab and W10 'Apps and desktops view' by Windows+Tab.

So my question is, are the icons only hidden and the apps still there or have the slightest trace?! With that being said, I can say maybe Photos is the only one that has a trace, as pressing Mail notifs in the Action Center would do nothing, neither pressing Windows+I to open Settings. Hmm, stuff are getting more exciting.

I'm getting let down by this thread as barely somebody responded (only Joshua), and this is weird. My thread "Adware, everywhere!" received rapid replies (special thanks to Carol) and I was done from that adware in seconds. This one though, oh boy. Three days and still not the reply I need.

All in all, here is the picture below. I hope this receives a rapid reply too as I'm tired of my situation and am in need of native W10 apps, most importantly Mail and Settings

Restoring your computer to an earlier point in time won't affect your files. It will only remove all the apps, updates, and drivers that were installed on your computer after that exact system restore point. System restore will literally restore your computer to its state during that point. If ever the threat on your computer comes back after the system restore, you could always remove it by following the same steps that you took to get rid of it.

Kindly get back to us once you've performed a system restore on your computer.
