Windows Update We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet.

Windows Update ran fine 12/22/15, but today 12/24/15 its giving this error:

Windows 10

We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet.

Any suggestions?  Its pretty obvious my Internet works on the PC, since I'm in this forum posting this question!

Thanks for trying to help. The troubleshooter indicates it can't fix the problem with Windows 10 update. It reads: "Service registration is missing or corrupt Not Fixed". When I click on explore additional options it suggests reinstalling the operating system.

Use the Following tutorial to  Reset Windows updates completely and check if it helps:

Make sure to run the script as an administrator.

Thanks everyone. I fixed it by getting rid of Windows 10, did a clean install of Windows 7...

EDIT:

lol turns out that even after a complete clean install of Windows 7, the Update feature hung, (it would kust get stuck at "Checking for Updates". I tried the usual net stop wuauserv and then net start wuauserv with the same results. I figured I'd take a chance and try upgrading to Windows 10 again... That too got stuck at "Checking for Updates" during the install. I did the CMD run as administrator and just used the "net stop wuauserv" command, (without restarting it), and that seems to have fixed the update issue. Windows 10 finished the install, (got stuck one more time during that process at Checking for Updates so I intervened with another CMD "net stop wuauserv" and then Windows 10 finished the install and once up and running the automatic updates are working again.

Not sure what if anything I did to fix it, but it seems like Windows 10 does not play well with the "wuauserv" whatever that is.

This script does not resolve the issue.  My problem is identical to "ToddDonald"'s initial enquiry.

AndyCKN,

Open Control Panel -> Troubleshooting -> Fix problems with Windows Update

Click Advanced, and choose Run as Administrator (and tick Apply repairs automatically.)

Post back what it reports.

Ramesh,  regrettably however, the fault still exists:

"We couldn’t connect to the update service. We’ll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn’t work, make sure that you’re connected to the Internet."
