Windows 10 Explorer.exe keeps crashing

Hi,

I upgraded my laptop from windows7 to windows10 thru automatic upgrade. Upgrade was done successfully however noticed an issue that Explorer.exe kept crashing every few seconds, this happened for a few days and then it worked fine for few days. But for the last couple of weeks its back to its own funny ways, explorer.exe keeps crashing and restarting every few seconds, doesn't let me open any folders but keeps Chrome and IE open though I have to click on them again to resume browsing.

Its very annoying as I cannot do anything worthwhile on the machine.

I've checked for a soultion on the microsoft forum but nothing worked.

Any possible solutions will be appreciated

Hello,

We regret the inconvenience. Let me assist you.

follow the below suggested methods and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Method 1

This issue may happen due to system file corruption. I suggest you to run System file checker. System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow the below given steps:

  • Press Windows key + X, select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.

  • In Command prompt type sfc /scannow and press enter.

  • Restart the computer.

Ref: Using System File Checker in Windows 10

Method 2

If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state or were irrecoverable, then I suggest you to try the following steps to deploy the DISM command lines:

  1. Press Windows key + X.

  2. Click command prompt (Run as administrator).

  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press Enter key after each command:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Important: When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions.

  4. To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter

Click here for more information about running the DISM Tool.

Write to us with the updated status and the required information related to Windows performance, for us to be able to assist you further.

Thank You.

The error references the ntdll.dll which is a component of Window however another, possibly third party, module may actually be causing the crash.

As no other modules show up in that information I am going to suggest to try to obtain a user mode dump of the crash which should show all the loaded and unloaded modules and perhaps pinpoint the exact cause.

You can configure Windows to create user-mode dumps. Create a System Restore Point first.

If you copy and paste the following in Notepad and save as a .reg file (save with the .reg extension and give it any name such as dump.reg), then right-click the .reg file and select "Merge" to add to the registry, a .dmp file at the time explorer.exe crashes should be created in the C:\CrashDumps folder:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\explorer.exe]
"DumpFolder"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,43,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,44,00,75,\
00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00

After Explorer (explorer.exe) crashes, can you then make the .dmp file available (provide link) via a public folder on OneDrive (SkyDrive) or similar site?

Here's a couple of links on using OneDrive (SkyDrive):

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/skydrive/add-photos-files-faq

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/onedrive/share-file-folder

More info on collecting user-mode dumps:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb787181(VS.85).aspx

To stop the creation of the user mode dump files run the following registry file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\explorer.exe]

You can delete the C:\CrashDumps folder anytime.

I would only like to point out that you entered the commands incorrectly. There should be a space before each forward slash, so

DISM.exe  /Online  /Cleanup-image  /Scanhealth

and not

DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-image/Scanhealth

With that, you should be able to use the functionality.
