Windows Mail setup for Verizon (now AOL) account

I just got a new PC with Windows 10, and for some reason cannot get the Windows Mail app to sync with my Verizon / AOL email account.   (Verizon email was bought by AOL some time back; email address and server settings are still Verizon though).    I'm using all the same settings as my previous PC (Windows Live Mail) as well as several other devices (phones).   So I know the settings are correct, however the Mail client will not sync (retrieve email to Inbox).   Help please!

Using:

Incoming email server pop3.verizon.net:995

Outgoing email server smtp.verizon.net:465

Authentication on both incoming and outgoing

Outgoing is POP3 server

Thanks

Might be worth checking...

Disable two-step authentication
Even though two-step authentication is a great security feature that you should definitely use, sometimes this feature can cause problems with Mail app on Windows 10.

As a workaround, users are suggesting to disable two-step authentication for your AOL email and check if that solves the problem for you. By disabling this feature, you’ll reduce the security of your email account, so you might want to think twice before disabling it.

Update - I contacted AOL, and found out how to make it work using other email clients (Windows Live Mail - I have an old copy, and Mozilla Thunderbird), and got it working on those clients, using IMAP*.   You have to set up an "app password" in the AOL security settings, and then use that password in the email client instead of the account password.   I had to delete the account and re-add in order for it to work; normally that'd be a pain though in my case this was new setup on a new PC so it wasn't a big deal to do a "reset" (I didn't lose emails since the last 30 days are still on the server, and I still have all my old eml files).

Sorry but MS Mail just didn't do it for me.   For one thing there's way too much wasted screen space (I hate how so many PC apps and web pages are becoming phone-like), but also the fact that it didn't support AOL setup was the additional deal-breaker.

Thanks for the help.

(*Edit: correction - actually I'm still using POP, not IMAP.   Also for some reason my WLM is having issues, but I think it's a corruption / bug issue; Thunderbird is working just fine, so I'm switching to that)

I assume that your @verizon.net email is on AOL Mail server.

Apparently, AOL requires that older, less secure email clients, access their mail server by using and additional step.  My email client is Office 365 Outlook for PC desktop which is the very latest under Office 365 subscription so I was surprised that my Outlook is in this "less secure" category.  But the solution was easier than I expected.

  1. Open Aol Mail online, log into your account and go to your email page (all your verizon.net email will be there.
  2. On the upper right side under your email address, go to Options (dropdown) and select Account Info.  In the Account Info, click on Account Security on the left side.  On the very bottom you will see "Manage app passwords." Keep this page open!
  3. Go to Outlook and Add Account using your verizon.net email address.  Below where you insert your verizon.net email address, click on Advanced Options and check "Let me set up my account manually."  In the next window, select IMAP (if you use POP follow the same analogy).
  4. The next window will prompt you to enter your password.  Stop!
  5. Go back to the open Aol Mail Account Security page and in the "Manage app passwords" section, click to generate a one time app password.
  6. Copy this password and paste it into where you were prompted in step 4 (outlook).
  7. In the next window use the setting depicted below.  Under the text IMAP Account Settings you will see your verizon.net email address (I blocked it in black).  If not, start over as you must have entered your email address incorrectly.
  8. Enter the settings exactly as shown below, and once you click "Next" your verizon.net email will be added to the left pane (unless you modified the layout), all your email folders will carry over from AOL server and all your emails will start carrying over to their folder.  The same procedure and settings should work with every email client that will not connect you with your own password.
  9. Voilà

Thanks NK Man!  My outlook 365 stopped synching on Wednesday for some unknown reason. Phone app works on my Android and my wife's iPhone, but I couldn't get Outlook to work.  My email was actually converted to a Yahoo account way back before Verizon gave up the email business.  So the specific instructions weren't what I needed, the KEY was the one-time app password!!!  I followed that part of your instruction and bang - right in!

Thanks again, I hope this helps others.

BillB&, I'm happy to learn that the relevant part of my introductions provided a solution.

Two more things: 1) the "one-time app password" procedure applies not only to Outlook 365 but to any Outlook version or any other email client, and 2) if you were ever to sign out, or get signed out, of your "Verizon" account in your Outlook 365 (or any other email client), you'll have to use the "one-time app password" procedure again, and that applies to any subsequent sign outs.

Hi sharonliska,

Please see my detailed post from February 21, 2020.  It provides step-by-step instructions.  The server configuration is not the real issue, it is the "one-time app password" procedure that must be followed.  As far as the server configuration, if your @verizon.net email is hosted by AOL, the server configuration in my instructions should work.

I hope that solves it.

On step 5 above, which of the drop down choices, to get a one time security code, applies to the Windows 10 mail app which is on the tool bar? Outlook iOS? Outlook Desktop? Other app?

Thanks
