Hi Peter,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I would suggest you follow the steps below and see if it helps.

Method 1: Restart explorer.exe

1. Click Ctrl key + shift key + Esc key to open Task Manager.

2. Right click on explorer.exe and click End task.

3. Click Windows key + R, to open run command.

4. Type "explorer.exe" and click Enter key.

Method 2: Manually set icons on notification area

1. Press Windows key, go to Settings > System > Notification & actions > Turn system icon on or off.

2. Now you can set icons you want to display on the Notification area, just click on/off and Exit.

Hope this helps. Please respond if you have further related queries.

Regards,

Jesinta Rozario

Solution #1 worked for me.  I just went to Task Manager and right clicked on windows explorer - chose the option to restart.   The screen blinked and my icon was back.  Thanks for the answer.

Thanks Jesinta! Method one actually worked!

Though you should have reminded them that it's actually windows explorer when on task manager,and/or if it is not appearing then open a folder and it should appear.

Though I didn't knew myself that it could be the windows explorer was the problem.

Thanks!

Hi!

If the issue still persist on you, just as the same method as Jesinta, though a little different on procedure/ instructions.

Hope it helps!

step 1: open task manager, you can right click on the task bar then choose task manager or

press "ctrl+alt+del" or "ctrl+shift+esc" on your keyboard at the same time.

step 2: find the explorer.exe/windows explorer on task manager, if it is not appearing, open a folder and it should appear.

step 3: right click on explorer.exe or windows explorer and end task, the screen should turn black but with task manager open.

step 4: on task manager, click on file at the top left part, then "run new task" then type in "explorer.exe" then "ok"!

bobbique, I understand by killing "explorer" and restarting it again from File / Run New Task, but you say right click on "explorer" and chose the option to restart? I right click on the "explorer" but I do not see anywhere an option to restart.

As stated, killing the "explorer" and restarting it again fixes it but your statement is leaving me a bit baffled.

My question would be, why does the sound icon disappear in the first place?

Hi!

When you found windows explorer, there is an option to restart, just below "expand", and if it is not, it is all the

way to the top, click on the windows explorer then right click on it, there is an option to restart.

As for the cause, even I don't have a definite answer on why it happens, anyone could give a false report but not

me, I won't say anything about I don't know. The only thing I know are the causes which is:

1. allowing the computer to sleep, especially windows 10 may cause that to happen,

2. outdated sound drivers may cause it also.

Thanks for posting here! If you have any more concern feel free to ask me!
