Since Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Remote Desktop (mstsc.exe) no longer executes when using an external manifest

Details also recounted here http://superuser.com/q/1115765/197331

Basically if you set PreferExternalManifests in the registry, mstsc.exe used to run completely fine and machines that you would remote to did not have an insanely high DPI.

Now since the anniversary update, PreferExternalManifests key disappeared from the registry, and if you set it then mstsc.exe just doesn't execute at all. If you run as administrator, you get the UAC dialog asking for permission, but then nothing happens. No process, no events that I can see, nothing.

Any ideas on how either 1) this specific issue could be resolved or 2) any other ways of remoting to other machines with a readable DPI

Hi Adam,

As the issue still persists, we would ask you to uninstall the anniversary update and check if the issue persists.

To uninstall the Anniversary Update:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Select Update & security and then the Recovery tab.

  3. Under “Go back to an earlier build”, click the Get started button and follow the instructions.

(Note: If more than 10 days have elapsed since installing the Anniversary Update or the “Go back” option is otherwise not available; we ask for your patience until a patch can be released.   Please check back on this thread for an update.)

And then again update and then check if it helps.

Please let us know if the issue is resolved or you need any further assistance.

Thank you.

Have a good day!
