Fingerprint login no longer works

I upgraded my HP Envy-15t Laptop to Windows 10 recently and the fingerprint login feature was working just fine for over 3 months.

Today, I tried to add another finger print for my spouse using the sign-in options under Accounts setup. The fingerprint option did not work for her. Then I tried removing all fingerprints and set up my fingerprint again.

Now, the fingerprint does not work at all. It comes up with 'authentication failed - please try again' message. I really liked the fingerprint option to login and want to restore that feature back. Please help.

Hi Raj,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern regarding the issue that you are facing.

This could be due to outdated or incompatible finger print sensor driver installed on the computer. You may also check if the BIOS version is updated.

I would suggest you to run the hardware and device troubleshooter and see if it fixes the issue. Follow the methods:

Method 1:

Refer to the link below to run the troubleshooter:

Refer to the section “Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter”

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/what-device-isnt-installed-properly

Check if the sensor works when you try to login. If not, proceed to the next method.

Method 2:

The fingerprint reader hardware requires a device driver to allow software to control it. Let's try updating the driver to further troubleshoot the issue.

To update the fingerprint reader device driver, follow the steps:

a) Press Windows and X key together and click on Device Manager.

b) Locate the Biometric devices icon and expand the driver icon.

c) Right click on the finger print sensor driver and select “Update driver software”.

d) Choose, "Browse my computer for driver software”.

e) Choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".

f) Choose the driver from the list and follow the onscreen instructions to install the driver.

Restart the computer and check if it has resolved the issue. If not, I would suggest you to refer to the manufacturer website of the laptop to download and install the latest driver. Also check for the BIOS updates at their website.

Disclaimer: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help.

Thank you.
