Windows 10 'sync your settings' isn't working

So, I like to sync everything on the list in the 'sync your settings' settings, but I notice it isn't working, or at least, some of it isn't.

I have all options turned on on my laptop AND my Surface, and the theme isn't syncing.

On my Surface, the desktop background, colour, and lock screen are different from my laptop, and won't sync.

I've tried changing them on each device to try to make it sync, but neither device makes it work.

I assume if the theme isn't syncing, nothing else is either.

So, how can I get the sync working?

Hi Estragon,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. Let’s try fixing the issue.

Let’s try simple troubleshooting steps and check if this helps.  I suggest you to run Microsoft account troubleshooter and check if that helps. Microsoft account troubleshooter will check Corrupt Microsoft Account settings, Can’t connect to the sync service, Problems with Microsoft account Policy, Can’t connect to the sync service, Sync your settings is turned off , Problem with system registration and etc. related to Microsoft account.

The troubleshooter says:

"The following settings have sync turned off: Installed Apps, Start Screen"

and

"No rootcauses found and created logs"

I guess the first thing won't have affected the theme syncing, but I don't know what the 'no rootcauses' thing means.

I have downloaded and run microsoftaccounts.diagcab maybe 30 times and always get the same thing "The following settings have sync turned off: Installed Apps". And today just updated to Windows 10 Build 14295 the newest and the diagcab results are the same. If some Installed Apps have sync turned off WHAT ARE THEY, WHERE ARE THEY, and HOW DO I TURN THEM BACK ON...

I have the same problem here.

I had run the troubleshooter few times and is says every time;

1. Can't connect to the sync service.

There might be an Internet connection problem or the service may not be available. Please check your Internet connection and try again.

Don't think my internet connection is having any problem since I can reply on this.

2. Rootcauses found and created logs.

Collect additional information about this problem.

Not sure what are the roots causing the issue.

3. Some settings have sync turned off.

Have check all sync settings have been turned on before running the troubleshooter.

To further isolate the concern, have you verified if the PC's sync settings are actually turned on/off?

To check the sync settings, see below:

  1. Open Start, and then click on Settings.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Under Accounts, click on Sync your settings.
  4. Check if Sync settings is turned On. If not, click on the switch to turn it on.

We also suggest running System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing & Management (DISM.exe) to check the system.

Here's how:

  1. Press the Windows key + X, and then select Command Prompt (Admin).
If prompted by User Account Control, click on Yes.
  2. In the Command Prompt window, type the command for SFC found below and then press Enter:
    SFC /Scannow
  3. Type the command for DISM.exe found below and then press Enter:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Restart your PC.

Let us know how it goes.
